Nikon D90 shutter issue

I just bought this, delivered today. I bought this because I really liked my daughters.
The issue is the shutter button. For the short time I've had it, it hardly ever actuates.
I also bought the 18-55 lens, kept thinking it was the contacts. Right now it is the only lens I have for it.
Send them back, or is there a fix for this??

Is the camera focusing? Depending on settings, the camera may not fire the shutter if it cannot achieve focus. Rather than have you tell us all your settings, just do a quick test... Put the little af/m lever on the left front of the camera to M. Put the mode dial on top of the camera to M. Press the shutter button. If it fires, then you need to find why the camera is not focusing. Try a two button reset and also reset the custom shooting menu. Good to do this anyway on a new-to-you used camera.
Still not firing? Try removing the lens, mode dial set to M, press shutter button. This will eliminate a bad lens or contacts, the camera should fire in Manual mode with no lens.
Also, is the memory card good and not full? Try a format in camera.

Put the lever back to AF and see if the camera attempts to focus. Be aware of where your focus point is. Do those resets if you have not already. Auto mode might prevent firing under some conditions too. Try A mode. Set a lot numbered aperture. Make sure light is good. Dim light can prevent focus. That's all I got for tonight, falling asleep, lol.

I used to have that problem with my camera. I will have to try to remember what it was that was causing it not to work.

Oh yeah, make sure it is not on "red eye."

ok, fresh day... So... Two button reset and custom menu reset. For two button reset, 2 buttons on top of camera marked with green dot. +/- and AF. Press and hold at same time for 2 seconds. Reset custom menu is the first item in the custom shooting menu. Af/m lever back to A position. Then mode dial to 'A' (aperture) mode. Set 5.6 with front wheel. Look through viewfinder at something well lit across the room (not something real close). Do you see/hear the lens focusing, then settling in on something? Try to take a picture. Make note of the focus point in the viewfinder. Use the multi selector on the back of camera to move the focus point back to the center if it is not there. You might need to unlock the multi selector with the lever below it. Move it from L to the dot to enable the multi selector.

With good light, your camera should acquire focus and shoot. There are focus modes to learn about, but you should be able to fire the shutter as described above regardless of focus mode. If not, you need to see if the lens is looking for focus or if it is not moving at all. It might be broken in either case though. Try twisting the lens body as if to mount/dismount without pushing the lens release button. You are doing this just to make sure the lens is snapped in correctly and making good contact.

I discovered what the problem was.
I am new to Nikon, and when I ordered the lens, it was a new model of the lens, that would not work with the older camera :(.
Lens is being returned, and am getting the right one this time, lesson learned....

Yes, that is exactly what it was. Returned it, and am borrowing one of my daughters lenses, until I order a lens that will work with the camera.

Funny, when I decided to upgrade my very old Mamya Sekor SLR one of the key reasons I went with Nikon was because basically every Nikon SLR lens worked with every Nikon SLR camera. Now that is no longer the case. Many of the newer cameras will not work fully with the older screw drive focus lenses. And now the newer lens will not work fully with the older (4 years old D7200 camera!!!). Coupled with the D7500 being a crippled camera mainly designed to sell more D500s, is it really any wonder Nikon is losing customers?

Love my D90. Several folks have told me they wish they had theirs back. Something about the sensor used in the D90 and D300. Plenty good, very good non af-p lenses. I haven't found a reason to upgrade for what I shoot. Happy shooting!!

With my D90, when i push the shutter the mirror stops in the up position and the picture shows up on the display with the top half blocked by the mirror and it displays "err" message. To clear it, I push the shutter again and this causes the mirror to flip a couple times and then it returns to normal position. I have tried multiple settings and they all act the same. I removed the lens and set it to manual mode and it still does the same thing. I tried the two button reset without success. any suggestions?
