I just pulled the trigger on this lens and am looking forward to receiving it shortly. Anyone have experience with it? I'm going to use it for portraits, still life and so on. I didn't think the 1.4 version was worth 3x+ the price of this.

I have it and use it once in a while - only when I need narrow DOF since I have the focal length covered with my zooms. Really nice lens. Wish it focused a little closer. Sharp as a tack. I can't see spending 3X the amount to shave off fractions of an inch in DOF.

It might sound silly but I was a little taken aback at first at just how much "tele" 85mm actually provides on a DX format (for whatever reason) but I love my 85mm f/1.8 for all the reasons I'm sure you will; it's flat out awesome. Between the 85mm and the 35mm, my 50mm has been doing little more than collecting dust. I use mine for stills but if I was a portraits sort of shooter, this would be my go-to lens for sure.

I've had mine for a while now and love it but don't use it very often but I had it on a recent camping trip and got this shot of my grandson.

I bought one earlier this year during one of Nikon's $100 off sales. Got it specifically as a light weight alternative to my 70-200 2.8 and for low light/shallow DOF. Here's a shot from a senior dog fund raiser a few weeks back at 1.8.

is an 85mm lens really a telephoto....?

just sayin..

It is a short telephoto, but yes it is a telephoto. Even more so with DX. It is the shortest telephoto I consider using for portraiture work.

The incremental increase in IQ may not be worth the extra money to you but I got rid of my 85mm f/2 AIS, which was a very good lens, for the 85mm f/1.4 AIS and the increase in IQ was considerable. It is my go-to lens for half and full length portraits. switch to the 105mm f/1.8 for 1/4 portraits
