lens extension help

So I was talking with a guy I met who had a D7100 and then had the 70-300 plus an extension. He said the extension works good, but cost around $400. Can anyone suggest a good extension that has the electrical connections for the auto focus, etc... I would be using it with my 55-200 for a bit more reach or would it just be better to sell that lens and get the 55-300? Thanks!

I think you mean a "teleconverter", for extending focal length, usually 1.4x, 1.7x, or 2x longer. An "extension tube" is something quite different, a glassless tube for very closeup macro work.

See Teleconverters | B&H Photo Video for what is available. The Nikon brand teleconverters each have a small list of compatible lenses.

The teleconverters are not very sharp in the corners, and need to be used well stopped down (like f/8) to maintain some of the sharpness. An actual real longer lens is often the best choice.
