Jessops 360AFD Flash and Nikon D5100

I've just bought a Jessops 360AFD flash and it only seems to work as a slave flash on the Nikon D5100.

Is this the case or am I doing something wrong.

Have you got the flash set to the slave mode (S) ???

Hi, many thanks for your reply.
The only way the flash works is when its off the hot shoe and on S. I've tried a combination of settings without luck.
