I recently bought a Nikon D810 through an auction house. I spent the same amount on it that I would have spent to get a used one. I am not a professional photographer, I just wanted a camera that could do more... hopeful that I would learn how to use it. It is ONLY taking pictures with a red/pink filtered look. (see link).
I reset the settings a few times…I tried setting the white balance to auto and then modifying the auto to green and the pictures didn’t look any different….also tried resetting the white balance with a white piece of paper. I don't know what to do. There is not a repair shop anywhere nearby and I'm leaving for a cross-country trip in a week. PLEASE any help would be appreciated.

We cannot view your photos in the link unless you share them to everyone.

Red pink description has me wondering if it has been infrared modified. You would not know that looking on the exterior of the camera, but the photos will make it evident.

Here is an image from my own infrared-converted camera set as Auto White-Balance.

Then if you take a White Balance preset reading off of green grass it will make an image like this.

This is what all my pictures look like.. it looks like there is a filter on it. I looked at the shutter count and its only 4,000 so it doesn't look like its been used a lot but I don't know enough to know what to do to change it to a normal coloring.

If it is an IR conversion, I would think you would be better served to sell it and purchase another. I don't know much about IR converted cameras, but I believe they go for a premium compared to full spectrum models.

You say you believe it has a filter on it. What is the filter, and have you tried removing it?

Take it outside and photograph something with green leaves or some kind of evergreen tree or shrub. That will be what tells me if the visible-spectrum filter on the camera sensor was removed and either replaced with an infrared-pass sensor or a clear sensor for full-spectrum. People pay $300+ to have a camera altered in this way.

Full spectrum is commonly used for astrophotography so that more light from outside of visible range can expose the sensor. Infrared conversion replicates using infrared film with a special infrared filteAr. It gives a specific look and can often see through haze better to reveal details.

Hold on, my memory is being tickled. Nikon did their own full-spectrum conversion of the D810 and marketed it as the D810A (for Astrophotography). Is the badge on the front of the camera actually a D810A? See link.

I did a bit of WB adjustment. I cannot do an extreme adjustment on a JPG like I can on a Raw image. But I substituted in the WB color temperature from one of my infrared photos on to your's. This has me thinking more that it is an IR conversion. Short answer, it is not worth trying to convert the camera back if it is an infrared conversion. Better to trade in for another straight D810. Or even better if you can handle the upgrade for a used D850.

Thank you so much for the information. It is a D810, without the "A" afterwards. I bought it for around $800 on an online auction. It was an estate sale. The estate had EVERY Nikon ever made in it (I'm exaggerating a little). Seriously, he had everything and was obviously a professional photographer. I really wanted to this for a trip to Yosemite and Grand Canyon we are going on this month. I will take some pictures outside tomorrow and upload them. I'll try to figure out how to do it in the RAW formate. If this man did convert it IR, how do I know what to sell it for?

You might try talking to a used camera company like MPB or KEH and explain what you have and see what they could do for you with a trade. Of course, you need to be sure it's an IR conversion. You probably won't get as much from selling it to one of these companies, as opposed to selling it directly, but it's a lot less hassles, and an IR converted is probably going to be much easier to sell with a wider audience.

No real need to post the Raw file, but what I want to see is how green leaves will look in the photo. That is the big characteristic of infrared, green leaves and grass turn white when the white balance is properly adjusted.

I have a thread of infrared photos that I really should bring up to date. I kind of forgot about it after a year. But you can see the characteristics to look for.

LifePixel as of today will sell a used D810 with IR conversion (and a warranty on the conversion work) for $849+ and I suspect you would have to take a good bit less to sell as-is. I do not see any Nikon IR conversions listed for sale at KEH or MPB right now. But they both will buy a working IR camera. I think they just offer the same price as an unconverted camera. I bought my current D600 IR conversion from KEH. So selling your camera at either of those places is an option and you can apply the sale as credit toward a replacement used camera.

Here is a picture from the camera from today. Its sunny outside and this is my front lawn, very green still here in middle Tennessee. What is your thoughts, @BF Hammer ?

Do you mean that it would be easy to sell to an individual than to a company such as MPB or KEH?

No, it should be easier to sell to a company. The down side is that you probably won't get as much for it, but you won't have to advertise it and deal with people trying to get it for far less than it's worth. Not to mention the issue of meeting a complete stranger with a somewhat high dollar item.

My understanding is with some place like KEH or MPB, You contact them, I believe they will give you an estimate, and then you ship it to them. They will inspect it and give you a hard quote. If you agree, they send you the money, if not, they ship the camera back to you. A quick call or two should give you a pretty good idea of what you are looking at. If you buy your replacement from one of these companies, they normally have a warranty period. If you are not happy with the camera, when you receive it, you can send it back.

BTW, if the number in your screen name is your zip code, I have relatives in the area. Chattanooga and Ooltewah. I haven't been there in many, many years, but fondly remember visiting them when I was a child.

Oh yeah, it's an infrared conversion. Looks like a 720nm IR filter used.

So selling to an individual is really going to be a right person, right time sort of thing. May take months as this sort of photography is done more in the summer. Your quickest option to sell the camera is to use a reseller like MPB or KEH and take the loss. Maybe consider taking the credit and buying a lesser camera body instead, like a D750?

Yes! I was in college in Cleveland, TN - that's the 37311 zip code, but I lived in Ooltewah and now we live in Manchester, TN. Ooltewah and Chattanooga are where all our family live! Its a great place!

Yeah, I think I'm going to loose money on this camera for sure. I thought I was getting the best deal!! :) Its ok. You live and learn! Thank you for all the help!

FYI, it could factor in to your choices that MPB is in New York and KEH is Atlanta. I expect your time to ship to and from KEH might be overnight.
