D5100 Shutter panic

All hands on deck!

My shutter seems to be playing up and I am hoping it is a setting that I have inadvertently changed.

The shutter is only working intermittently. Seems to work in live view but not when shooting through the viewfinder. In view finder mode I get [r10] where the shutter speed usually is as soon as I press down on the shutter.

Anyone know what is up?

have you tried pushing the two green buttons to do a reset? you will lose any settings that you have saved, dont know what else to try Lawrence, youtube??

r10 is the designation of the Nikon wireless remote -- did you change the release setting?

Do a reset and start over setting up the camera. I have had to do this several times with new cameras. It normally fixes the problem but more than that it forces you to learn your camera better each time you have to go through the settings again.

How do you change the shutter options? In other words, look at your top display (if it has one) or wherever you see what mode your shutter is in. Check to see if it shows a "Remote" icon or setting. On my D90 I can check the top LCD display and I can scroll through "S" for single release, "L" for low speed continuous, "H" for high speed continuous, "Self timer" and "Remote".

Also, check to see that you did not inadvertently switch your lens to "Manual" only focus. If the camera can't focus the shutter won't fire (depending on the mode it is in).

I also got the r10 message tonight while messing with my radio poppers and forgot to change the camera settings to allow remote shutter operation.

Set on single mode. And this would not explain why it fires occasionally and not 100% of the time.
Lens is on auto. And I have tried with different lenses with the same result

According to what I found on Google it refers to the number of shots you can take before the buffer is full. But I thought the light comes on if you overdo that stuff.

Perplexing (there's a much easier 4 letter word! :dispirited: )

It would have explained it if, just by chance, the way you held the camera caused it to actually be in focus. But I think you have ruled that one out now.

Try putting every thing into manual mode and shoot.

my 5100 acted like that several times and finally died. I would do resets - change memory cards - change batteries - change lens - mirror lockup - nothing worked the last go around. Repair vs replacement i think would be about the same price, body only.

Yea, the r10 is not an issue. Have you tried taking the battery out? Also try to retrace what you were doing when you encountered this, you may have changed some setting. But I can't think of what would cause the shutter to work intermittently.

If you are having the buffer thing try that power switch thing I have posted before. turn camera Off, then rotate switch fully over to the "Bulb" setting. Hold for a few seconds. Turn camera Off and then back to "On". You may also have to shut it off and remove the card, then replace and power it back up.

If that is the case this is the end of my photography hobby.
It should still be under warranty as I only bought it in November.

Lawrence, remove the lens while the camera is Off and see if the mirror is up or down. If its up that is your issue. Mirror stuck.

Under warranty is good. if it is broken then you can send it in for service.
