Trying to setup back button focusing to the AEL, AFL button but cannot disable shutter button. Go to AF activation and set to AF-only then to controls and set AEL AFL on. Now the back button and shutter activate focusing What am I missing? Thanks

Thanks, I did all of that and AF mode is set to AF-C. Hate to do a complete reset but I'll try that as well before sending it in or just forget about back button focusing.. appreciate it!

Remember you can save the existing setting using the option to save / load settings in the setup menu.

Did a complete reset and it defaulted to area mode auto and focus mode to af-s. Left it in area mode and it works {shutter button disabled). Switched to af c and it still works. When I switch area mode from auto to anything else, the shutter focus comes back on

When I had the D7200 I did some notes that I still have (written i Swedish so I have to translate it, maybe it's not entirely correct)
I know that there are a couple of settings that has to be done, apart from AF-C.

Set focus to AF-C.
Pen -> f5 Assign AE-L/AF-L-button to AF-ON
Pen -> a1 Select AF-C priority -> prioritize shutter.
Pen -> a4 AF-activation -> Only AF-ON. (It then shows OFF!)
Pen -> g3 Assign AE-L/AF-L button > (two steps to the right) -> AF-ON

I hope that this will help you and that it's the same for D7500.

I did those same steps to no avail many time's. Called Nikon and a tech walked me through the same steps with a 7500 in her hand. Her 7500 disabled the shutter button from focusing mine did not even in AF-C focus mode. Only way it will disable the shutter button from focusing is to set the AF area mode to auto. Setting the area mode to anything other than auto does not disable shutter button focus
