Cameras on a plane?

Going on a trip overseas' so i thought it would be an ideal oppeetunity to actuallly use the D5100 i bought last July lol :)

Last time i took my old SLR it was in a on hip type bag, this time with the advent of digital, it seems its a tad more involved

So i have

D5100
2 x Chargers
Tripod
Laptop
Tablet
External drive

At there moment there all housed in a Tamrac laptop / camera rucksack

The tripod (small) will be packed in a suitcase, so the rest of the gear is as is.

Looking at the carry on restrictions, the widths for carry on / hand luggage are ...

55X40X20 (25) for a briefcase

A quick measure shows the rucksack to be 53X37X25

By my reckoning it should be ok, but knowing how fussy airlines can be, i though id check

I'm travelling with Singapore airlines btw

Take a single charger, and leave the external drive at home with the laptop (unless you have an absolute need for them).
Get yourself a spare battery and more memory cards instead.

Also check with the airline, some actually allow a camera bag on as additional baggage to your normal hand luggage. I think Singapore airlines allows up to 7kg in hand anyway, but if you're allowed a separate camera bag, that doesn't count towards that allowance.
Check with the airline though.

As for the sizes, you should be ok, as you're within very close measurements - it's more there to stop people trying to bring on oversized bags which then don't fit in the overheads.

The thing I always remember is to check the airline's baggage info on their own website, then if still worried go review hunting on a multitude of independent sites to get a good feel for it.

I travelled quite a few times this year to Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands on business trips with easy jet and Norweigen Air - both let me take the camera with it around my neck (with a small prime on) and my briefcase with laptop & strategically placed lenses. when specifically it states one piece of hand luggage per passanger and a woman's handbag counts as 1 piece. :D

Speaking of travel by plane, I'm new to the digital world and have a dumb question. Do our SDHC memory chips need any sort of protection from airport luggage x-rays/scans? Thank you.

Last year I traveled to Europe and then to Vietnam and had no problem with my camera gear. I packed my camera bag in my big suitcase and put camera, lenses, laptop with external drive into a backpack that I kept with me at all times. I had to take the camera and laptop out at a few security checks but had no problems whatsoever with the gear. I felt it was much safer with me than inside the checked luggage.

DSLRs don't seem to mind the X-ray machines as far as I know.

Also worth noting, that keep your electronic devices charged. I've been stopped many a time and asked to demo that the device actually works!

XRay machines don't tend to harm your SD cards, but there are some on the market that specifically state they are safe for airport scanning machines.

I have to assume those are centimeter measurements. If this is your only personal carry-on then I suspect you should have no problem, provided you do not over stuff it and it looks like it's bulging at the seems. Keep it over your shoulder as you board. and you'll probably have less of an issue. If it's one of two items of similar size that you personally have then they may want you to check one of them depending on how full the flight is - provided the other isn't a purse/handbag.

As was mentioned, have your camera and laptop batteries fully charged and keep the camera charger in the suitcase to save a little room.

I know my 30mb/s SanDisk extreme is xray proof - otherwise it would have melted by now (subject to my frustration if it ever screwed me out of some good shots, which it has not yet) ;)

No, it does state that it is xray proof on a packaging along with the 'waterproof' icons etc.

I just traveled to Savannah via air and had no issues. It was my first trip with my DSLR gear. All gear including batteries, memory, lenses etc in a backpack bag that was my carryon. I did not bring a tripod nor 1 lens whose range was covered by another. I had almost 300 images on the card and all was fine when I got home.

all went through the x-ray just fine.

Ok, Now to bring you up to date ...

Holiday - 3 weeks in WA :) 35-40 degrees C every day!

I shot on average 100 pics every day, apart from the two days i was in hospital with a suspected broken neck!!!

I managed to fall over on a beach and chip a lump off C5, and push the C5 disc into my spinal cord....

I spent the next 2 weeks (and still am) in a neck brace :(..

Had to curtail some of the more adventurous bits we had planned, but the pay off ws some great shots...

Just need to get them all catalouged, and may neeed to learn a bit of photoshop before i get some on here for you

guys to apraise

So sorry to hear of your injury. Back injuries are not to be taken lightly. Get better soon. Hope the camera survived the fall better than you did LOL.

If you have View NX2 that came with your camera you can resize your photos. Normally you can resize the to 1000px on the long side. That works pretty good.
ON the ViewNX2 menu it in on the far right at the top. IT says "Convert Files"

Ahhh... that might be a problem......because support for viewnx2 is scarce in the UK, everthing seems to be photoshop geared, i converted everthing raw wise to DNG

I,ll have a go using the jpegs i hived off

If you have photoshop you can downsize it there. Any photo program should be able to do it. View NX2 is free and it can be downloaded from the Nikon Site. It is a good basic editing program that is worth a try if you don't have anything else
