    Nifty Fifty Assignment Lens Discussion

Re: July 2014 Monthly Assignment - Nifty Fifty(ish)!! I think we need to stop and clarify what the actual parameters are of this challenge. I interpret the initial description to mean that we should use a “normal lens”. 50mm is nominally considered a “normal lens” for a 35mm camera...

Your first digital camera - does not have to be a DSLR.

My first digital camera is this Kodak DC3200. A friend of mine had two digital cameras at the time, and wanted a 35mm SLR. I had a couple of extra 35mm SLRs, and I traded one of them (a Miranda) to my friend for this Kodak.

    Aperture stuck!!!!!!

Is it possible that you just don't know how to change the aperture in M mode? On my D3200 (and I assume it's the same on your D3000) you need to press and hold this button, while turning this wheel, to change the aperture. Turning the wheel without pressing the button changes the shutter speed.

June Monthly Assignment - BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDS!!!!

This is Ava. She's the silliest bird in my home. My wife and I never really formed the intent to have a bird as a pet. This one showed up on our doorstep one very cold winter night, injured and starving and cold. We took her in, and did the best we could to care for her. We weren't sure...

    Still have your first SLR?

My first SLR was a Miranda, that I picked up at a garage sale for $25. Alas, I no longer have it. I traded it for a Kodak DC3200, which was my very first digital camera. My second SLR was a Nikon F2, which I still have. Though I'll probably never use it again, it would be very difficult to...

    HDR with D3200?

I suppose it should be apparent, by now, that it is possible to take bracketed photo sets with the D3200, either using DSLR Dashboard, as I have suggested, or else with more manual methods. For me, the trick seems to be getting from there to an HDR image. I have so far failed to produce...

    18-55mm won't autofocus. Help Please!

On seeing the thread title, I immediately thought of this switch, and wondered if perhaps you had it set wrong. It switches the lens between autofocus and manual focus. But on reading your post, it appears your issue is more complex than that. I post this anyway, just in case it helps you...

What's more important......... the Camera, or the Lens

Which is the more important blade in a pair of scissors? In terms of technical quality, a camera can take no better picture than what it's sensor can properly render. It can also take no better picture than what its lens can focus. Ultimately, the quality of the final image is limited to...

    Post your MICRO flowers

Oddly, on some social photo-sharing sites, if I post a picture like this of a wild plant, and tag it as a #weed, it tends to draw the attention of druggies.

    Aperture Priority/ Focus Modes

The concept that you need to understand, @Rawfocus, is depth of field. To oversimplify, the larger the aperture (the smaller the ƒ-number) the shallower the depth of field will be, and the smaller the aperture (the larger the ƒ-number), the greater the depth of field will be. Focal length...

    Post your wet shave gear

No wet shaving for me. This is how I do it… I'm not sure the age of this razor, but it's probably somewhere on the order of ten years old. I've had it long enough to have worn out one set of heads and needed to replace them. It's an odd thing. My father always favored the cheap...
