Flash compatibility Sigma EF-610 DG

Yes and No... The D780, as you're aware, doesn't have a builtin flash, nor does it have the Nikon CLS Commander mode features... Yes, it'll work with your EF-610 DG ST, to the extent that any flash will work, but it won't fire that flash OFF-camera using Nikon's CLS features...unless you use a separate radio trigger/receiver combo.

No, it won't damage the camera...that standard hasn't changed in a few decades now.

The TTL will most likely work fine... Where you might find an issue is using that flash Off-camera... The D780 doesn't use Nikon's CLS (Creative Lighting System) to communicate with off-camera flashes that support it. Nikon's gone to a "radio" trigger system to communicate with their flashes... That Sigma light might support radio triggers, but you'd have to buy that separately from Sigma...

Great - thanks for the info.

I'll give it a crack and post the outcome.

Can always dig out my old optical triggers and sync them to an onboard flash ;)

Ouch... That's a shame... I'm guessing more folks are going to be disappointed with their flash as Nikon continues to produce cameras that diverge from their many decades of CLS compatibility... Probably one of the reasons they're now partnering with 3rd party flash producers...
