I got this creepy looking gadget in the mail yesterday

It looks like something out of a 1950's B-movie sci fi flick but it works like a champ. You can vary each of the two flashes from full power to 1:128 independently and it has a pilot light to aid in focusing in dim light. You can twist each flash into an infinite array of positions.

I shot this tiny (less than 3/4" from leg tip to leg tip) Orchard Orb Web Spider yesterday with it hand held using a 105mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor and PN-11 extension tube. I set the base exposure from the ambient light and closed down 1/2 stop and set each flashes on 1/16 power. My guess worked very well. I am going to build some diffusers out of 0.030" opaque white styrene sheet for each to soften the light.
