In the menu settings go to: Custom Settings -> Flash Sync Speed. Then change the sync speed to 1/320 (Auto-FP).

Reread the original question and see that the 2nd response here was correct. Modified here to provide additional information about flash synch on the D70 vs other models.

You can synch the shutter on the D70 up to 1/4000 without using HSS. This is a fairly well known feature of the D70/D70s (maybe D50 also?). The camera has an electronic first shutter that will synch with flash reliably up to 1/4000th of a second. (unreliably up to 1/8000). Subsequent Nikon cameras didn't have this feature. To use it with a Nikon flash, you need to cover all the contacts on the hot shoe except for the primary contact in the center (basically turning off all the auto capability). You can find lots of info on this by searching in Google for "D70 flash synch speed"
