Using a flash gun as a flash sync.

Hi, hopefully someone may be able me with my settings. I have just bought a d600.
With my other camera, a d300, I could put my flash gun on the hot shoe, set it to manual, power at it's lowest setting and use that to set off my free standing flash lights.
With the new camera there is a delay in pressing the shutter to the flash and shutter working.
What am I doing wrong in the settings...all I want to do is press the shutter and the flash on the hot shoe fire instantly.
Thanks Bobby

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

I would also make sure the flash is not set to rear sync.

Thanks for the kind welcome.
The focus settings on these cameras are a mind boggling!
I was brought up and trained on film cameras that are a lot less complicated...Now, having got my d300 camera settings set up to work for me, I am struggling with this, new to me, D600.

Bikerbrent, thanks for the welcome and thanks for getting me to check the rear focus sync, I did that by using this info I sourced....

....push in the flash button (the lightning bolt), the pop-up flash will pop-up, continue holding the button in and rotate the rear control dial. turn until the top lcd shows "rear". release the button. the display will change to "slow rear".

Rocketcowboy, thanks for your advice, are you refering to the focus or release button in the autofocus menu?

My main requirements are for shooting families in a studio that involve plenty of movement, any further advice will be gratefully received.

I have mine set on release priority (vs focus priority), but it really depends on how you focus. I want the shot when I press the button and not have the camera continuing to attempt focus if for some reason it doesn’t have it already.

The common cause for such complaints about shutter delay time with flash is Red Eye Correction. It is another choice in that same Rear menu. Be sure it is not set to Red Eye. But it may not be the cause this time because what it does is delay one second while flashing weakly three times (to reduce eye pupil diameter), and then the shutter and flash triggers.

And there is one called Exposure Delay, that simply waits a second or two to activate the shutter.

Another of course is the Self Timer setting. It is two places, regular Self Timer and in the remote control menu if using remote.

Find all of these in the manual index. Searchable PDF manuals are at https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/index.html
