First Shots With Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid (aka: Honeycomb)

Posting my initial test shots using the Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid which is Rogue's take on the honeycomb modifier. Getting proper flash placement with these is critical as it focuses the beam really tightly. I'm also using both grids for the narrowest possible beam in these shots.

First impressions of the Rogue are all positive... I'm having a blast with this thing and can't wait to use it for more serious portraiture, film noir style!

For my first ever shots using this modifier I'm practicing with one of my favorite plaster busts. I love plaster busts. Plaster busts work cheap and don't complain (much).

I have been thinking about picking one of these up. What do you think of it after using it for a year? Do you get a lot of use out of it?

Thanks,
Matt

Well the Rogue, essentially, is a snoot; so if you find yourself using a snoot on the regs, the Rogue is a great choice. It's well designed, light and easy to use.

On a more personal note, I really like what I'm going to call noir-style portraiture and my Rogue is my go-to modifier for that. Unfortunately I don't get the chance to do as much noir-style photography as i would like which means my Rogue does not see as much use as I would like. Still, when you want a round light, and tight control over the the direction of that round light, the Rogue just works. Be prepared to experiment with it before doing any serious work; it's very flexible and at least for me, it's simplicity belied the creative control it would offer. What I mean by that is, the additional creative aspects were a lot to wrap my head around.

This is a shot I did not long after getting my Rogue I'm pretty happy with:

Cindy, I did look into the Mag Mod system and while it looks really nice, it is just so expensive...
Could have been my post... MagMod gear looks awesome but the price of admission is just more than I'm willing to shell out.

Godox released their round-head for the AD200 which has a magnetic mount and takes some spiffy mods; I'm hoping that may be a sign of more things magnetic to come from them because I really do like the snap-on/off convenience of magnetic attachments as well as the Godox price-points.

Paul,

I looked into the S-R1 Adapter earlier this year, as it appears to work with any brand of flash.

Adorama is going to sell the adapter for just under $7 and the accessory kit for $60. This may be the best solution for me, as it would provide many more modifier options.

I'd all but forgotten about the S-R1 (as I wait for B&H to have them in stock); thanks for the reminder! That's going to work nicely on my V860.

I've heard of this system (vaguely) and think Godox is smart to get on board with magnetic modifiers. I have some of the MagMod items which are terrific. The thing is the Godox AD200 is SO popular with MagMod users that they are stretching their MagGrips over the round heads. I don't know if Godox has an attachment with magnets for their round heads, but if not, I hope it's something they will consider.

I added the S-R1 to my B&H Wish List and will see how it gets rated. It's far cheaper than a MagGrip for flashes. ;) Here's to hoping it will work well with MagMod products (meaning the magnets will have a strong connection). :)

Would this be a good kit for the AD200?
Just to be clear, that kit is specifically designed for use with the Godox H200R, the round-head. Those mods won't work with the standard Fresnel head of the AD200.

That being said, I very much like the H200R. The accessory kit FOR the H200R, which is what you're asking about, I don't really care for.
