Well I started off with this one, the Ravelli ALS which is big, heavy and durable. I now tend to use these much more compact LumoPro LP608 light stands instead. The Ravelli is a great stand, it just depends on what you're looking for and I'm moving toward smaller, lighter and more portable. If you have some unused tripods you can convert them to light stands easily enough using a cold-shoe. You'll need to add a swivel, though, if you want to attach an umbrella.

As for modifiers I don't use a softbox myself but I really like the LumoPro 3-in-1 Convertible Umbrella I just got. After getting to use one of these for a while, I finally bought my own. The only drawback to it is converting from one modifier to another does take some time. It's not difficult, it just takes a minute; so if speed of changing your modifier is of the essence you might want to consider another option. I really like the Wescot Octabox with the beauty dish, but it's more than I want to spend at the moment.

As for swivels I've been very happy with these LumoPro LP633's, but many people prefer the Manfrotto 026 instead.
