I need some help from the Yongnuo crowd.

I have a D7100 and the YN568.

If I want to use the YN622N-TX i - TTL Controller to trigger the YN568, Do I need the YN622N Transceiver to put under the YN568?

Controller
Yongnuo YN-622N-TX i-TTL Wireless Flash Controller YN-622N-TX

Transceiver
Yongnuo i-TTL Transceiver YN622N for Nikon Cameras YN-622N II

I know the D7100 has Commander mode. It works most of the time. I'm looking at other options to trigger the YN568 remotely.

Short answer, yes, you'll want the YN-622N.

I have 3x YN568s that I use off-camera with my D7100. As you mentioned, they can be triggered using commander mode, but that does require line of sight from the camera body to the speedlight. When I started using soft boxes, I lost that line of sight and needed to go radio. The challenge is, the 568 does not have an internal radio receiver like the 560IV does, so therefore needs a 622 (or 602/603 if shooting manual mode) to sit on top of.

Now, Yongnuo is migrating from the original 622N (both transceiver and controller) to the 622N-II. I still have the first model. There are supposed to be some improvements with the II series, but I'm not clear on the interoperability between the I and II units. If you haven't purchased anything 622 related yet, I would probably opt to get both the 622N-TX-II and the 622N-II (I'm 90% certain both the controller and transceiver were being updated).

622tx- for camera only. cant add a flash on the hot shoe
622- transmitter or receiver as u like.

you can technically use 2-622n slaves. the 622n does have the option to control that ocf power levels but you use a set of button in code and its a pita. but the tx unit is much easier to use as its visual. bad part is that it takes the space to use an on camera flash vs the 622 which would allow. .

Sounds good. Probably order the set in a paycheck or two.
Thanks guys!

haha, I can imagine if it were pocket wizard. itd be a bit different..."probably order the set in half a year"

have you considered the 603II model. $30 shipped. excellent set and truthfully, after using 622 for so many weddings its an overkill. I dont use ttl mode. it sucks and isnt accurate. and the af assist light needs to be turned off when I shoot weddings because its the red cross hairs are captured on the videogs footage. the bigger plus for me is, it will do high speed sync so many times im shooting the BG outdoors and use a tiny tiny tiny bit of lighting. its a plus.
used a softbox and used a tiny amount to light their face. 70-200 VR1 f/4 1/500 @135mm aprx
sorry for the small image. had some work stolen recently.

No, I have not. My knowledge of flash and flash goodies is very limited. Before I bought the YN568, I was pushing my f1.8 primes to the limit indoors.
The YN568 is a big help. My house has bad lighting and bad sight angles for the Commander mode.
I'll give the 603II a look.
If your not using TTL are you setting the flash settings (GASP!) manually? That's downright scary!
I've never done that. Back to Wayne's website to read some more.

And your image is great.

Great resource right there. There's also an off camera flash group on Facebook that I've found to be there helpful, and one of the admins there is an importer of Yongnuo gear.

Would you please PM me the FB group for off camera flash? I am just getting started with flash (Nikon) and would appreciate learning more. Thanks!

Well, does your D7100 have a 10-pin connector or a DC-2 connector?

It looks like the DC2.
I've never plugged anything into the D7100 so I never noticed what plug-in ports it has.
I always pull the SD card and plug it into the laptop.

I set my camera and flash to manual to get an idea how it works. So far it's pretty straightforward.

I'll order the triggers after Dorky Dog's vet bill comes in.
