Which trigger for Yongnuo 565?

Hi all. Basic question for those of you with experience with the 565 flashes. I have a D7000 now (and possibly a D7100 in the near future), and would like to use one or two flashes off camera. Which Youngnuo radio triggers should I get for best function and reliability? Just read that the 622n doesn't play well with the 565. Should I be looking at the 603 or 602, or something else entirely? The flashes will be used from fill flash to back light and in between .... once I learn how to use them. 😜

Thanks in advance.

I own 8 flashes now. I just bought the 565 around a month ago to use with my weddings and it does not work well with the 622n at all. Im under time stress to finish family formals and the damn thing decides to take a break while im shooting. luckily for me I look at the screen every few frames to see its firing. but its a pita when you have groups of people in front of you and you have to go play with the flash. im passing the flash to a family member. the screen sucks as well. not the quality but the way info is shown. I just got a 3rd 560III that ill use with it.

new kids on the block SHANNY look like they have some killer gear. Ill give them time to get any (IF they do) bugs worked out. I think the way im seeing things, ill wind up selling all my yongnuo gear and moving all to Shanny. the build, features and price have started to make yongnuos service, quality and price look like crap. as soon as Shanny announced flashes yongnuo dropped their prices of the 568 flagship immeditely from $170 to $120. ive eaten to much crap with yongnuo and they have some bad CS. their repair to my 568 flash that fell to the floor from using their POS 603 mkI (becase it doesnt have a locking wheel-whos the idiot there who designed that) was just crap, so I am sour with them. I also have a huge problem with the 622n where one camera/slave/flash setup fires another camera/slave/flash. so in a wedding, IM shooting and flashing my self in the eye with the other camera is around my neck with the flash up. HUGE FAIL for me.

personally, I would ONLY use a nikon flash on camera. off camera, 560III are killer as they also have a battery pack port should you need it. SB800 doesnt work well with 622n on camera. off camera its fine.

the 602/3/5 dont have a ttl pass through hot shoe though (if I remember correctly) so for me they are out. the ttl pass through is a must because its my main flash and the ones off camera are supplementary/fill flash to light the dance floor/ceremony area im shooting.

phottix make good slaves from what I hear, but I dont see a reason why one needs to spend so much today for a pair of slaves. im also not keen on buying different mfr. I was considering buying godox (V850/860) but after reports of many people have huge fails with their batteries I wouldnt touch them if you gave them to me for free. to me when a company doesnt post theyre having issue with the batteries, to me that says ethics and I lose all respect for a company. they are out.

take a look at the SN600N and see if that fits your needs. I would buy their flashes now but im just waiting to see what slaves they plan on offering. I have a feeling Ill be selling all my yongnuo gear and buying all SHanny in the future though. probably by summer for wedding season. extremely fast recycle and the button layout and LCD are killer!

I have the YN 565EX flash, and it works very well with the Yongnuo RF 603N II. I also have the YN 560 III. Awesome flash, and have not had a problem yet. I don't expect any problems either. :) So to answer your question, I would be quite confident in recommending the RF 603N II trigger...which has a pass through hot shoe, by the way. :)

YONGNUO RF-603 II – Now Available | FLASH HAVOC

it says

Improved Features -

  • Higher Sync Speeds, up to 1/320th (RF-602 were slow, RF-603 were very slow)
  • Locking Rings on trigger foot (RF-603 and flash on top would fall off the camera)
  • Pass Through Hotshoe now usable (see point above) though still manual only no TTL
  • Power Switch Finally Moved to the Side (was blocked by the flash on 602 & 603)
  • Compatible with non Canon/Nikon and single firing pin cameras (RF-603 was not)
  • Test Fire Button works off the camera hotshoe (for taking light meter readings) (RF-603 did not)
  • 300v Safe Trigger Voltage (for hotshoe and PC sync port) (602/603 where low 12 volt safe limit)

does this mean the flash itself on the camera will work TTL but the OCF works in manual?
seems like they fixed the negatives from the MKI. it seems like a good choice because truthfully, the TTL on the 622n is horribly inaccurate. but the AF assist beam on it is amazing. helps lock focus extremely quick.
there are no good options for ttl slaves out there today. although I hardly use ttl OCF, itd be nice to have.

OP. also regarding the 560TX. if you get 560III/IV you could use it to manually adjust power on them through that and if you need the hot shoe, you can use the 603II on the flash and just use the TX to adjust level. shame you cant mix 622/603 together.

Thanks for the tips! Looks like I'll be ordering a 560 II for the second flash unit and a set of 603n II triggers. That's plenty to get me started down the path of learning what flash lighting can do. I figure I'll get a cheap stand or two to set them on and a mini softbox for on camera hot shoe flash use as well.

Anything else you can suggest?

Get the YN560 III, not the YN560 II.

Hi

I am currently looking into getting a Yongnuo flash and trigger set. I was originally getting the 565ex but now I have seen that you suggest the 560 III. The 560 III doesn't have TTL does it? How important is this? I am just starting out with my camera so a complete novice so unsure if I sure be going for a TTL or manual unit only?

Flash TTL has its benefits as well as its drawbacks. I prefer controlling my flashes, hence I use the YN560 III's with the 603N II triggers for off camera flash. My YN565EX I use mostly hooked to my camera.
Very soon, I'm going to get the YN560 TX controller (trigger) for my YN560 III flash, plus another YN560 III.

Yongnuo only makes two types of flashes with built-in radio triggers: manual-only flashes (YN-560III & YN-560IV). The YN-565EX/568EX/500EX (and MkIIs) models do not have a radio receiver built in.
The built-in slave modes on the YN-565EX are optical (light-based), not radio. It can be used in Nikon's CLS (or Canon's wireless eTTL) system, and can be used as a "dumb" optical slave to fire from a flash burst from any flash (similar to SU-4 mode on a Nikon speedlight). Optical-based triggering, though, has range of line-of-sight requirements that become more stringent and restrictive if you're shooting outdoors and in bright sunlight.

The receiver on the YN565EX is optical. It responds to pulsed light signals sent from the master flash mounted on the camera. This makes it compatible with Nikon's CLS, which is optical.
The transmitter on the YN560TX uses radio signals, not optical pulses, to communicate with the flash. You need to attach a radio receiver to the YN565EX so that it can receive the radio signals from the YN560TX.

Long and drawn out, I know...but I hope it answers your question about which one to get. :) Let us know what you decide.

I think I may just do what David is doing then and get the 560 III and the YN560 III.

As I am a novice, guess I don't need the best of the best just yet as got to get my head around anything other than Auto settings yet! Haha!

Thank you for your help. Happy Xmas everyone
