Flash recommendations?

Hi all,

so I'm going to be photographing indoors this weekend and believe it's time to invest in a flash. My budget for this flash is under $300. I would be using it with both my d5200 and a d3200. I've been reading all over and now I'm more confused than when I started. Figure someone here can help me figure this out and save some of my hair from falling out haha. Any recommendations?

Compatible flash guns for Nikons are Sunpak, Sigma, Yongnuo and of course Nikon to name a few. I've heard Yongnuo work very well with Nikons CLS system and are relatively cheap. Quite a number of them sell for around $100. Not sure about the Sunpak, Sigma as i've never heard talk about them here. Nikons SB700 sells for around $300. Personally i'd choose the Nikon only because i'm a first party kind of person. You're other issue is knowing how to use it. You could just put it on TTL and hope for the best but even the automatic modes have limitations. It takes a while to learn flash photography but the results are endless. Good luck.

Welcome.

If it's this weekend, you may need to visit the local camera store (have any near you?)

Nikon SB-700 is the best bet for that price point ($326 or so). Youngnuo has a nice Nikon TTL compatible flash unit, but your time cruch might hinder that as it will need to be shipped.

Good Luck!

One option... Get a Yongnuo 468-II for about $100, suck up the cost of overnight shipping and still be well under budget.

I do love me the SB-700, I just think Nikon wants an obscene amount of money for it.

After reading the reviews on the Yongnuo, it looks like that might just be the way to go.. HAHA I'm about to order, any final words before I do (or forever hold your peace haha)??

=) Lets cross our fingers it makes it in time.

I'm going to wait 20 minutes before ordering, just in case someone in here has any bad experience with the Yongnuo and a D5200.

Try to get your hands on an SB-800. Definitely the best bang for your buck. I have three of them and they work perfectly with my D3200.

The SB-400 works great for me, and must be at least half the price at £115 in civilised currency.

I do like mine but it was hit-and-miss when I used it. That's why I got the SB-800, it's consistent over more situations.

To be honest, I hardly use flash (inbuilt or otherwise). Last Sunday was the first time for moons (but it gave me some lovely soft shots).

I don't think you always get what you pay for, but I do believe you always have to pay for what you get.
I tend to think the Nikon prices are high, but they are very dependable from everything I've read so far. I plan to get the SB-700 myself. But that is because I tend to buy what I think will be both dependable and last a long time, and the Nikon seems to fill the bill. :)
