Cannot see through viewfinder

I have an old Manual 35mm Nikon FE2. Batteries are not in it and there is no film in it. Shouldn't I still be able to see through the viewfinder?

Yes... Unless the mirror is locked or jammed in the UP position... If the mirror is UP then you won't be able to see thru the viewfinder. It should NOT be UP...

OK...
1. Mirror up mode, As said it requires 2 shutter presses to cancel. The mirror up mode button is the second one down from the top to the left of the LCD screen. Check that it is not on
2. Live View. The live view button appears to be near the top of the right side of the rear LCD screen. When you are in live view, the eye piece is black and the picture on the rear LCD will move as you move the camera.

Check these first. It is possible you are pressing those buttons without knowing it, especially if you press the camera firmly into your face when you look thru the eyepiece. Don't ask how I know :D
Do you have a user manual? If not download one. They can be confusing but are very helpful

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

You know you may get better responses if you start a new thread rather than tacking on one from 1013! :encouragement:

Remove the lense. This will tell you if the problem is in the body. It is rare but you could have a broken apatite blade. Every time I have the problem I just remove the lense cap. :)
