Expanding screen for easier viewing

I generally run my browser on a portrait mode monitor. When I am viewing a thread the page is divided into 3 columns. The first is the poster's information, the second is the text of the thread (which I want to read) and the third is some utility stuff (Most liked today etc.) If I expand my screen with Ctrl + or Ctrl and up mouse wheel, all three columns expand and the text column gets squeezed into uselessness. The text might be one word wide and the right most column takes up half of the screen.

Is there a better way?

TIA,

Ken

Drives me nuts too, until I found the right arrows >> at the top of the page.
click on them and the right column goes away

I wish the default was off for this useless 3rd column

Thanks Texas,

That is just what I need. I though there might be a way to zap the right column but I did not see the control. Need to clean my glasses.

Thanks.

Even I did not know that. Now I have a wider screen.
