We need a Camera Tech section that is not camera model specific

I know, not another request for a special forum section. But look and see if this is viable.

I am looking for a place to ask a technical question that could apply to just about any camera out there. A technical question that has absolutely nothing to do with the lens, the camera model or any specific type of photography.

Does the AF system on a Nikon camera continue to focus track even when the mirror is up?

That question applies to any Nikon SLR AF camera except mirrorless, it is not specific to the lens used except the lens must be an AF lens and it has nothing to do with any specific type of photography.

Heck, just a General Camera Talk section would provide a better area than nothing. Doesn't have to specifically be a camera tech section. I just think that we could use an area for camera technical type stuff without posting it in a specific camera model forum.

Off Topic or in the camera type you have. Most people don't restrict their viewing to just one section. Like me, I go to "What's New" and look at all the topics and see what interests me. I see many topics that are asked about a specific camera and really goes for any camera.

Really? You know this for a fact? I have a 5200 -- I don't even bother trying to figure out the sometimes mysterious topic headers in other camera type forums; I do not have the luxury of time to drill down into each one, so just skip them. How in the world am I to discern which might have a pan-camera nugget of truth or comprehension? A general camera forum for nonspecific camera questions -- too much to ask?

I sorta agree with Don. When I open up Nikonites I click on new posts and pick which ones I'm interested in. But at the same time it doesn't take long for a thread that has no answers to disappear from that list. So having a special section would help in that instance.

There is a General Digital SLR Camera section. The description wants to limit it to an "everything else" forum, but were the mods to change that it would help drive folks to it if they're not using the "New Post" feature as I am.

That said, I believe a Tech section might be rather beneficial since there's a lot of tech to talk about. Maybe don't limit it to Camera Tech, but "Photography Tech Talk" covers an awful lot, and there's some good discussion that happens when a question is asked about a certain model that really pertains to most/all Nikons. Having 4 different models I can vouch for at least having read, if not answering the same question about multiple cameras (don't get me started on answering the same question multiple times for the same camera - people need to use the search function). I for one would welcome a place where you can ask a model-neutral question, because it might invite some folks who would normally ignore a question because it's in the D800 section and they're shooting DX to either participate, or maybe even (gasp) learn something.

A tech section would be good, but I think you’re going to get a lot of questions in it that don’t belong in it and would be better suited in another thread. I think it would be a Moderator nightmare trying to police it.

When I see the word tech I think of a person that repairs or works on cameras. A section of hard to find answers only a Camera “Tech” would know the answers to.

I don’t know if we have any “Techs” on board with us, but if we do it may be a great asset.

My two cents guys and girls

Maybe we could have a "Tech Help" forum where questions and/or problems could be asked. But just "Tech" would bring too much of anything IMHO.

I do the same thing but the problem for me, on that question I posed, was exactly where to put it. I ended up using the D90 forum because that is the camera I have but the question could cover almost any Nikon camera or other brand as well.

A tutorial section wasn't my thought either. Just a place for questions that are more camera technical/mechanical than photography related.

I lived with that for over 20 years. Get it fixed! Its quick and easy now and you are only down for about three days.

Jake, I swear I looked for that General DSLR section and is where I was going to place my question. I am not sure how I missed it.

This is kind of what the General DSLR forum is meant for. We can certainly change the description a bit to foster a different flavor of discussion.

Maybe just a "Technical Q&A" sticky in the general DSLR forum?

And I knew that section was there. It was just like I told Jake, somehow, I just missed it.

Mike d90 it happens to the best of us LOL.

A general techie questions and advice section under the General DSLR link sounds like a good idea, I have a D2x, D700 and D800 as well as a Fuji S2 pro (somewhere) and there are things that would cross over between all cameras, hints, tips and techniques can be universal and interchangeable, I would be posting in all three camera type forums. In response to a different question on here I am not a camera tech but I have changed the sensor in the S2 pro, there are probably more of us around that are willing to fiddle, again somewhere to ask might be handy :)

I think something along the lines of a "Photo Tech" forum, or sub-forum, with a descriptor that indicates the forum is for general, technical questions regarding photography; as opposed to being a forum for discussion regarding computer tech or vBulletin, et al. would be a good idea.
