My 35mm film kit

Like most of us, I shot 35mm film for many years. My father had a Minolta XG-7 and I bought a new XG-1 in 1979 or so (yes, I actually saved up paper route money). My kit consisted of the XG-1 body and a 50mm f1.7 lens. I shot that until the mid 90s when I moved to a Minolta Freedom Zoom 150 35mm point and shoot. From there I went to a Canon digital point & shoot.

Fast forward to 2006 when our daughter was born, I discovered 'shutter lag'. My sister in law, who worked in advertising, was on the Nikon account. She told me about the all new consumer grade Nikon D40 digital SLR. I had her pick up the D40/18-55mm kit for me (at her cost, direct from Nikon). I shot this on AUTO for many years, purchasing a 55-200mm along the way.

In 2015 I got the 35mm film bug again. I dusted off my XG-1 and ran two rolls of film through it. Worked out great! I read up on film shooting and realized the all mighty Minolta X-700 could be had in good used condition fairly cheap on ebay. I ended up buying two x-700 bodies, a Minolta Hi-Matic F (point and shoot 35mm film rangefinder of sorts).
I now wanted a rangefinder, read up and found the Yashica Electro 35 series was pretty good and cheap. I bought a nice clean GSN on ebay for under $40. This camera works perfect and needed only a battery.

I then picked up a nice deal on a Nikon FE2 with a 50mm f1.8 for about $100 on a facebook camera group. Since then the FE2 has been my goto 35mm SLR and the GSN my second camera.

After shooting various rolls of color and B&W film through both, I realized I wanted a GOOD 35mm film camera. REsearch led me to the F3. Tried and true, a professional camera with everything I wanted. The first Nikon with the famed red stripe as well. My shopping consisted of ebay and craigslist. I started looking around at Etsy as well, it was there I scored a nice, working F3/T body for only $100. SCORE! These sell for much much more on ebay for sure. Paired with my FE2, Nikon 50mm f1.8 & 28mm f2.8, I am now shooting my first roll of film through the F3/T this week. Hoping the pictures come out just fine as I move forward.

My plan is to sell off the two X-700 bodies, retire my original XG-1 to the showcase. I may keep the Hi-Matic 7 as it is in excellent condition and is not worth much anyway.

Planned purchases include;

Nikon eyecups for both the F3/T & FE2
DW-3 waist viewfinder for the F3/T
Picked up the AS-f flash mount for the F3/T
Shopping for a Nikon 35mm f2.5 Series E lens

My current film kit consists of the Nikon F3/T (50mm f1.8 & 28mm f2.8) and Yashica Electro 35 GSN
The FE2 is a backup

I STILL shoot a lot of film, mostly black and white with the Hasselblad, because the quality is as good as it gets, but I still use my 35mm. I have quite a 35mm stable; FTn, F2, F4E, FA, FE2, Nikkormat FT3 and Nikonos V. And none really sit on the shelf and collect dust except the Nikonos because I have not been diving in a while. Just this past weekend I went out and shot some nature stuff with my venerable FTn, my very first Nikon back in 1974 along with the D700 and D300. A fellow who was also shooting there asked me what camera I was using. He was about my age and was shooting Nikon so I was a little surprised when he did not recognize the iconic Nikon F. He was even more surprised to learn that I not only still shot film but processed and printed all of my stuff as well, both color and black and white.

Digital has come a very long way when it comes to color, but it still falls MILES SHORT in black and white compared to fine grained film like T-MAX 100 and very high quality paper like Oriental Seagull G2 and G3.

I hear you! I just love the feel and sound shooting these cameras.
I recently ordered the eyepiece finder and AS-4 flash coupler this week as I build this kit. Choosing a NICE strap is next, looks like I'll drop $60-100 for the right one.

I'm ordering this Zing neoprene camera cover. This camera goes to work with me and this seems like a nice cover while the camera is in my work messenger bag. This saves me from needing to carry more than one bag daily.

I'm also hunting for a nice 35mm f2 to round out my set of primes for these Nikon cameras.

The weather returned back to winter here in Detroit, I'm looking forward to finishing this first roll of film to see how the camera shoots. Based on what I've seen so far, I do not expect any issues.

The Yashica Electro 35 GSN kit is coming along as well. I love the CLEAR hot shoe cover, I do not see these online often. This was included when I initially bought the camera on ebay in March 2015 for under $50. The camera arrived in perfect working condition with the original YASHICA carry case/strap and original lens cap.

Recent additions include a nice Yashica Tele-wide finder I scored on ebay. This was on a black GT camera, picked up the set for just $13.50! The camera, while very nice, is not working and I plan to flip it in ebay soon. The finders usually go for $20-35 themselves.

My camera strap is the same as seen on Peter Parker in the Spiderman movies.

In February, I picked up a MINT Yashica CS-220 flash unit on ebay for $9.80 and a NICE used B&W 55mm red contrast filter for $23.50.

I just shot a roll of Tri-x 400 through the GSN using this red filter. I plan to have three rolls developed, this, a roll of Superia 400 color in the GSN right now and the same in the F3/T.

Stay tuned...

I have three rolls of 35mm film heading for processing later this week.
I threw another roll of Superia 400 (available locally at CVS if you can believe that, they have Kodak UltraMax 400 as well), in the F3 Monday night. Even though I haven't seen results of roll #1, I'm assuming it's good to go :)

I've been shopping for a NICE strap for the F3, something to compliment the dashing good looks. I selected a leather strap from Hawkesmill in England. It should be here by next week I imagine.

I had the photo cube setup last night with a couple of speedlights, so I thought I would treat the latest gear to a little shoot, who doesn't like some good camera porn :)

Enjoy ----

Four rolls waiting to go in for processing currently;

F3/T - Two rolls of Fuji Superia 400 & one roll of Ilford HP5
FE2 - One roll of Portra 160

GSN still has a roll of Fuji 400, I'll take in all five rolls once completed.

I bought these nice battery adapters for my Minolta Hi-Matic F -- Access Denied

It's been a while. I finally had 5 rolls of 35mm film developed/scanned. Most are OK, but my first roll of HP5 from my F3/T have some shots I really like.

I picked up a Fuji X100 in May (sold off the Hi-Matic F, 2 X700 and have the Coolpix A for sale).

A couple from the HP5 roll that I wanted to share.

I lilke this bar location, the cool design of the building. I waited for someone to walk by and this guy was just the right height :)

This guy reminded me of the iconic Blown-Away Man in a Le Corbusier chair in the Steven Steigman photograph for Maxell in 1978

Acquired a MINT set of cameras this weekend, Nikon N2020 w/35-135mm AF zoom & Chrome Nikon FE w/50mm f1.8 - original owner cameras with papers.

Just ordered the Artisan & Artist ACAM-108 strap in black and loading HP5 in the FE today to shoot with for a week or so. Can't wait :)

I'm shooting through the roll of HP5 on the Nikon FE. This camera looks and feels as new, I'm looking forward to the results.

I've been wanting a new prime lens 35mm film Point & shoot for a while, just bought a CLEAN Nikon One Touch (Same as the L35AF2) on ebay for a song.

With the Artisan & Artist ACAM-108 on indefinite back order, I canceled it through B&H, seems these are very hard to find for some reason. I really liked the look and that it had a built in wrist strap.

I finally picked up a Voigtlander 40mm f2 last week, threw it on the F3 with a roll of Portra 160 and plan to start shooting that this weekend.

The Nikon FE kit sold on ebay, just as I finished a roll of HP5 through it As that is on the way to the new owner, I look forward to the results of those pictures.

Picked up a new Voigtlander lens hood and cap, still shooting through the Portra 160.
Loaded the newly acquired Nikon One Touch (L35AF2) with Fuji 400, plan to finish that off this week and hopefully get four rolls to the lab for processing and scanning.

A few results from the FE / 50mm f1.8 kit I sold this summer.

Detroit - June/July 2017 - HP5

I had a nice silver Nikon FE with a 50mm 1.8 for a minute this summer, managed to shoot a roll of HP5 through it. What a nice camera

Shots are from Detroit in June/July 2017

Had a roll of Portra 160 processed recently from the F3/T and 50mm f1.8 from this past summer.

This is a new favorite, my daughter enjoying her Instax camera - this one will be hung in the house very soon

So, I have a roll from the F3 and Nikon Compact P&S waiting for processing.
With the fall season, youth hockey starting and a home move under our belt, it's time to get the film rolling again!

A clean $20 Nikon EM body arrived 12/28/17. Now has the 50mm 1.8 and HP5 loaded for some cold weather shooting.

Still shooting through the HP5 this month. With the freezing temps and snow, not getting out to shoot much.
I do like how this EM/50mm pancake combo slips easily into a coat pocket. I am not presently using a strap with this camera.

It also slips into my Timbuk2 Eula messenger along side my X100T kit :)
