South Bay Power Plant Implosion

This morning the city of San Diego brought down the South Bay Power plant to make way for a park in the lower bay estuaries. Although the shots of the power plant coming down are okay the thing that I found most fascinating was the power of the explosions. The shock wave coming off these explosions was tremendous, you could literally feel impact of these explosions pushing you backwards with each thump. They started spraying water all throughout the bottom section of the structure about 20 min before the explosions started and it took approximately 12 sec from the first explosion (on the other side of the structure and unseen by my viewpoint) to the end and then the cloud of debris came up covering the remaining structure. Unfortunately, the tower on the right did not come down all the way and the local news has been speculating what the city will have to do in order to begin cleaning this mess up.

All the steel will be recycled (ie - sent to China) and work will begin on creating a park that will reach out into the south bay estuary.

Unfortunately I've run out of my 20 photo limit but at least I got the good stuff in.

Love it! I like that cascading effect as the building collapse from right to left. That series would make an interesting still frame video with every second or two transitioning to the next photo. I'm not normally a video person, but I could see that as one. Great shots, none the less. Thanks.

That's an excellent idea. They were all taken on my tripod and have the exact same angle and dimensions. I'll do that and see if I can upload it to my website blog section. I'm thinking it'll be pretty big

What a great way to spend a day, blowing something up! I miss the good old days in the Infantry and Sappers!

Where the heck did those birds come from 11 photos in?

Awesome pictures! Glad to see that thing go. Always did think that was one ugly plant when I lived out there.
