Nikon School Online

This popped up in my Facebook news feed today. Back in the late 1990's, I attended one of the Nikon School one-day seminars in Philadelphia. It was very interesting and informative--and they showed LOTS of magnificent slides! ;)

Has anyone taken any of these classes, or are they relatively new?

There are an awful lot of free or very low cost photography videos on the internet for me to be interested in some of these high priced videos, but then I guess I am a cheapskate. I went to live Nikon schools several years ago, and I felt it was not cheap, but in the end worth it. Not having any interaction with the instructor for this kind of money does bother me.

I'm not cheap - just very frugal - and with so much free information - some of it even good stuff - it is hard for me to open my wallet to buy more information.

But I do buy books.

Used when I can, but I do buy new ones - if they are on sale.

Sometimes I even read them (or at least look at the pictures).

BUT - i have been tempted to attend live hands on workshops. Looked a a couple offered by "The Camera Store" - a mere seven hour drive away means I have to line it up with another reason to be in Calgary. They offer one on shooting dogs at a local dog park.

I looked at one a lot closer - only two hours away in Lloydminster by some "Tornado Guy" who teaches you how to make your camera sing.
Photography Workshops | TornadoHunters.com But looks too elementary and gimicky - and a little too expensive for this 'frugal photographer".

BUT so far, I've been 'self taught' . . . which explains a lot.

The live class I attended was really good, but it was held almost 20 years ago. I can't recall the exact price...am thinking it was @ $99 for the day (can't remember how many hours though). They gave us some type of pocket-sized field guide, too. Since these are online classes, they are convenient (no traveling). Just curious if anyone has taken one and if the classes are still decent. The thing is they used to give the hours the live classes were held so you'd know how much time was involved for the money. These online classes don't offer any idea of time for their cost.

Hmm...back then I bought a Nikon School baseball hat. It's still around here somewhere. ;)

I paid $50 for a couple hours with Joe McNally and came away really inspired after that.

There's good and bad instructors, just like good and bad (or just not the right fit, stylistically) photographers. There's also different learning methods. Some people do better with reading and self motivated learning, others need to be shown and experience the learning. If something works for ya, keep on keeping on. If it's not working, find another way. That's how I try to look at things.

This is good to know, Charlie! Thanks! ;) I was seriously looking at Joe McNally's Nikon flash online class. I just might give it a try! One thing I do wonder is if we will be able to access the video after watching it once--if it will still be available for future viewing. But...we'll see. :)

I was really interested in the Nikon School Online flash class, but after doing a little searching, I came up with their previous DVD on the Creative Lighting system. So for 1/5 the price of their online class, I'm hoping it will give me some pointers on the capabilities of their flash units. Their online class is specific for the SB-5000 which I don't even have so thought this DVD might be better suited to my SB-910 and SB-700.

Added that to my wish list.
Thank you!

You're quite welcome! And it ships from Cameta Camera (which is an online store that has gotten excellent comments from members). Based on the DVD's ratings, it should be informative and interesting! ;)
