Getting Your Shutter Count Without Uploading

I posted this in another thread and did a quick look-around to see if this was posted before and couldn't find anything, so here goes (mods, feel free to delete or merge if this is somewhere already).

In the past folks have been told to go to various websites to upload a JPEG (which many of us don't shoot) in order to determine your camera's shutter count. The number is in the EXIF data but not generally viewable with most EXIF viewers, and it does not display in Lightroom (no idea why). You can obviously download some of the cooler EXIF viewing tools out there (some of which are command line utilities), or if you have Photoshop or Elements you can simply open the file in there, go to File -> File Info, click on the Raw Data tab and search for ImageNumber.

Makes like a lot easier.

This is fine but what if you change your camera...?

?????
:confused::confused::confused:

This is the total shutter actuation count for a specific camera as tracked in the camera's firmware. Each camera maintains it separately across the life of the camera (even if Nikon replaces the shutter mechanism).

My reason for posting is that previously the recommendation had always been to upload a "small jpeg" to some place like NikonShutterCount.com, which requires both an internet connection and access to an original OOC jpeg you can export (making a JPEG from a RAW file might render the count in the EXIF unavailable depending on the software). If you have PS or PSE you can access the count from any OOC image file using the method above.

Irfanview also shows the shutter count.

I get frustrated every time @aroy posts this. I am not frustrated with Aroy, but with my version of Irfanview. My EXIF data list stops at "Makers Note (version):"

Nothing is listed below that. I have tried plugins, etc to no avail. Oh well, I use EXIFTool and RawTherapee which both list the Shutter Count (it is not disquised either, it say "Shutter Count" Ha!)

Just posted to show other alternatives to PS, LR or online methods.

After this thread and my previous comment on frustration with IrFanview, I took another look at it. This time I uninstalled the 32 bit version and downloaded the 64 bit version in Win10. Hooray! I now have "Shutter Count" with IrFanview. @aroy, you taunted me long enough to finally get it solved. Ha!

Seems there are definitely better tools in Windows than on a Mac for this. I've been using the Ps method for so long that I don't even bother looking to see if tools have improved, but when I started looking for EXiF viewers when I got my MacBook 3 years ago they were garbage.
