I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you can fully utilize this technique on the d3300. I know I cannot on the d3100. The technique requires that the camera be set for 'release priority'. That means the camera is allowed to snap a shot even when not in focus. Many of the benefits of the technique require this. I'm talking situations where you focus with the back button, release the back button, and recompose the shot. Easy enough to test, with back button set up, see if you can take an out of focus shot. If you cannot release the shutter with the focus point falling on something not in focus, you wont get full benefit from this technique.

There are some good user comments near the end of the article Horoscope linked regarding the d3200. Sounds like they coded release priority for use with the af-on button even the there is no menu item specifically for turning on release prioity. Hopefully they did this for the d3300 as well.

Nasim is great... Love his site.

As for the article, you didn't specifically say anything about wanting to set up Back-Button Focus so I hope you found the article informative and that it answered any questions you have. If you are interested in setting up BBF, there's a superbly comprehensive article on Nasim's site about that as well.

@nickt
i don't know about D3100. but i saw that D5000 has the same function like D3300
change the AE-L / AF-L button to AF-ON (not AE/AF Lock)
change it in the menu. see the tutorial at the end

you need to keep pressing the button if you haven't change to AF ON

I have used this function since the day I got my D3300. Mainly because I don't like the half press of the shutter release and having to hold it down to re-compose etc. I also like it as it essentially means I can use continuous AF at all times, whether taking photos of moving subjects or stationary.

I'll probably continue to use it for as long as I'm taking photos.
