Depth of Field Preview Button

Back in 'the old days', I had a few SLR film cameras that didn't have a DOF button (entry-level ones).

My solution was to push the lens release button, turn the lens slightly on it's bayonet mount, causing the lever that holds the aperture open to disengage, and this would cause the aperture to close to what I had set it at.

Inconvenient to be sure, but it worked.

@480sparky...one of the things I like about you is your improvisational skills. You always seem to find a work around solution. Great skills to have.

I used a DOF button on my Minolta SRT101 35mm film SLR, but I haven't found one to use on my D5300. If the D5300 has one, it is sure hidden. HA!

All my digital cameras for the last several years have had DOF/exposure/focus review buttons. Press the button and the image pops up for my review.

I use the DOF preview button all the time... after a while, you begin to get an innate sense of what it's supposed to show, and you skip the step... it's more of a "reminder" that I'm at the F-stop I think I'm at, without taking my eye away from the viewfinder to double check the aperture...

I got over it after about 0.3 seconds. Didn't need one before and my photography isn't gonna suffer now without it.

Oh heck.....Nikon's stock is gonna drop again....they were hoping you'd spring for a newer camera. In any case, happy shooting. I'm not sure which cameras have them and which ones don't.

Oh ill be springing for a D7100 soon. But Nikon will have to be patient. At least they're doing better than Canon from what I hear.
