Nikon DF VS D4

Hopefully this year I will be getting into the full frame world of photography. Currently, I have the Nikon D7100.

Would it be wise to save up for the D4 or go the cheaper route with the Nikon Df? Or should I spend the money on full frame lenses like the 14-24mm, 70-200mm and 85mm and use them on the D7100 until I can afford the new body? Decisions, decisions.

Glass it is.

As far as a good start, I would rather spend the money on the best first and learn on it then learn on a lower platform and buy another eventually. The Nikon D4 seems to be the best.

Definitely glass.
Year after year new models come in... old models become less desireable... The only thing that stays true is that the lenses will work with these newer models for years to come.

I paid for a Leica M9 and M Monochrom selling lenses, most from the 1930s. The lenses sold for 3x what I paid for them a few years ago.

I'm going for a DF to use with my Vintage Nikkor lenses. A comparison between the images from the DF and D4- the DF showed lower noise, probably due to the slower sensor readout.

How long have you owned the D7100?...Are you getting paid for your work? A D4 is a camera geared towards professional and/or commercial shooters...IMO depending on your response,The D800e might fit the bill for an upgrade...

What I would ask is what is it the D7100 is doing badly that FX will fix. Whilst I bought an 800 I do sometimes wonder this myself, nice as the 800 is. Admittedly I was going from a D300s which is not a modern sensor.

How much money do you want to spend and how much money do you want to invest. Separate the two amounts and buy lenses with investment money and a camera with spending money. This is how I see it.

I don't know what your goal is, but I'm quite sure you'd be more than happy with a D610 and lenses.

What do you like to shoot the most? The most expensive isn't always the best. I'd take a D610 over a Df for the D610 sensor.

The D7100 is an awesome camera. I'm happy with it, but I would rather have the full capabilities of the lens by having a full frame camera than the image being cropped by it.

Lately, I've been shooting a lot of portrait photography to make money and obviously there is more of a market in that field than other parts of photography.

But I do enjoy my scenery/landscape/nature shots as well. That's all I used to shoot before working on portrait.

I'm willing to spend the money on lenses, it will just take a little while to save up.

The lenses on my wish list are -

Nikon 14-24mm 2.8G
Nikon 85mm 1.4G
Nikon 70-200mm 2.8G

and maybe the 35mm 1.4G if it's worth the difference from my current 35mm 1.8G DX?

As far as camera body...if I'm going full frame from my current D7100, I figured I might as well get the best of the best. And that would be the D4 from what I gather.

If you have the cash. Go for it . Those are all great lenses and camera.

"The Holy Trinity" for Nikon I guess would be a good thing to have.

So would you suggest not bothering getting the 35mm 1.4G if I already am getting the 85mm? I heard the 35mm is good, but nothing exceptional.

No doubt that the f1.4 lenses are great lenses. It boils down to personal preference if that focal length works for you.
