Dear Friends,
I am a proud owner of Nikon D90 with Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR and Nikon 35mm 1.8G lens.
Now I want to buy one more lens, but I am in a dilemma on which one to buy as I have a tight budget I can only go for 50mm 1.8 D lens or 70-300 4.5 D lens.
I am more into portrait photography street photography and general photography and also occasionally I shoot bird or any photography which requires zoom.
Kindly advise me which lens I should go for.
Regards
Deepak

Deepak - welcome to the forum.

35mm and 50mm prime lenses are almost the same. Just take a step or two forward or backwards.

I never liked the 50mm on a DX camera.

I would probably get the zoom lens to give you extra reach for wildlife photography. It's a good lens with good light outdoor. However, the model that you chose isn't really great either. I would save more and get the newer zoom lenses if you are not in a hurry such as the 70-300mm with VR. Other wise, check the 55-200mm f4.5-5-6 VR.

I have a 70-300mm f4.Gives me Macro too.I use my 50mmf1.4 for portraits.My 90mmf2.8 for in between.If I were to buy again the 70-300mm VR is the way I'd go.Good Luck.

I have a Nikon D90 and a Nikon 70-300VR lens and think both are very good. The last four pictures that I have posted here on this site were taken with this combination and you can see them if you click on the number next to the word "images" over to the left in this post. They are the four pictures of the deer and were taken last week. If you can manage to do it I would save up and get the Nikon 70-300VR and I know you will be happy with it.

NOTE. I was thinking about which lens I used for these for pictures and re-checked. I had the 70-300VR on earlier that day but these were actually taken with my 70-200VR with the D90. I had forgotten about the change of lenses.

I'm with Glenn on this one concerning the 50mm - not all that different than 35 and I don't care for 50 on DX either. I think you would be disappointed with it compared to your 35. If anything I would suggest you go even wider like 21 or 24 or some super wide zoom particularly if you are doing general snap shot stuff, street, architecture, etc. Many folks believe in using the normal FL for portrait stuff but IMHO portrait stuff should be done with 85mm to 135mm lenses.

The Nikon 50mm 1.8 is a lens that I own and just about never use. The next lens that I own and do not use much is a Sigma 10-20mm. The Sigma 10-20mm is a very nice lens just not one I need that much. Both of these are nice lenses but I just don't find much need for them. The lens that I use the most is a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 and it gets used a bunch and is found on my camera most of the time. The next most used lens I have is the Nikon 70-200VR F2.8 and I have just added the new Nikon 20E III teleconverter to extend it to 400mm. I also own and use occasionally the Nikon 70-300VR and the Nikon 18-200VR. The only reason for listing my lenses is to let you see what I have available and which ones I use the most. Most of my picture taking is nature, landscapes and buildings.
