Turn off shutter sound?

Is it possible to turn off the shutter sound on the D90? I enjoy wildlife photography so I try to make as little noise as possible, but the shutter sound is annoying to me and the animals!

In short, no. You can try using Quiet Shutter mode, if the D90 supports it, but it doesn't really do what it says.

Welcome to Nikonites.

Unfortunately the D90 doesn't have a Quiet mode. The only cameras that can be used completely silently are mirrorless cameras. All DSLRs will have to move the mirror out of the way just before the shutter opens and then bring it back in down position. Now some models do have what they call a Quiet mode, but it's not noiseless. They only have a damping system that slows the mirror movement so it sound a bit less. But if you try to shoot in High Speed continuous mode, most DSLRs will make some noise.

I've tried Quiet Mode in the past (other Nikon DSLR's) but decided it slows down the shutter actuation slightly causing me to miss a few shots. And when I'm in a totally silent environment, it isn't that much quieter than when using one of the other modes. Quiet mode gives off a multi-click sound as the mirror moves first followed by the shutter moving. Then the mirror returns to its starting position.
