D90 or upgrade to D7000

I have a D90 which is in excellent nick with a shutter count of less than 9000. I only use it for general photo taking and occasional wildlife etc. I was wondering if it is worth upgrading to a D7000. I can get a used one in the UK for about £350 (body only). To be honest, I think it might be a waste of money as the results would not really be much better (if at all). I would appreciate any comments though.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I read that excellent comparison . But do I really need a weather proof camera? and I don't shoot at very high ISO's. Surely it's the lens that really makes the difference for someone like me (I think!).

Sounds like you may be better to look at lenses then,if you change your mind though consider this, its a gray import but new with three years warranty.

I can't really advise on either camera but if the D90 is doing what you want then I'd invest in glass instead. I see from your signature 50mm is the widest lens you have, so perhaps something like the Tokina 11-16mm or Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 but that really depends on you and what you like to shoot.

p.s. I was confused for a second as we seem to have 2 new Brians, yourself and @scarrabri, one with a D90 and the other with a D70.

£395? I was going to pay £359 for a used one. I don't know what a grey import is. As far as wide angle lenses go I keep being put off by barrel distortion. I would really like an ultra wide angle but the distortion keeps putting me off. I was going to get a 35mm 1.8D but even that suffers the problem.

A gray import has not come in through nikon UK so any warranty problems would need sorting by the shop you bought it from.

I guess a lot depends on what, exactly, you mean by "worth it".

That the D7000 is a significant upgrade in several areas, over your current D90, I don't think is in question because clearly it is. The question is would you appreciate and take advantage of those differences? Based on your few posts here, which admittedly is not a lot to go on, I'm wondering.

My question is, what is it that is motivating you to consider upgrading in the first place? Are you wanting to get more deeply involved in photography, is the D90 not doing it for you any more, are you wanting to upgrade and just looking for the "right" upgrade for you... Something else entirely? I ask because I think the rational for upgrading should determine the upgrade path, bearing in mind the D7000 will take better photos from a purely technical standpoint (better color depth, higher resolution, better contrast) due to it having more recent technology, but it won't make you a better photographer.

Excellent reply Mr Fish. In my case I think it's a case of 'just getting something better'. To be honest it will not make a blind bit of difference to my photography. Why do people change cars when there's nothing wrong with the old one?. I think I will look for a decent wide angle lens as someone suggested.

Upgrading for the sake of newer, better tech is a perfectly acceptable reason. Just to be clear, I don't really care *why* you want to upgrade, but knowing helps me give you what I think is a better suggestion.

More importantly really top-notch glass can do wonders for any camera. If you think you want a wide-angle lens the ones suggested by Elliot87 are two very good suggestions. I personally find wide angle lenses the most difficult lenses to shoot well from an artistic standpoint; I think of wide angle lenses as "story telling" lenses but that's me and I don't think I'm all that good a story teller. The over-arching point here is, really good glass might be the way to go if you're not unhappy with you D90. On the other hand, being able to go from a D90 to a D7000 for £350 would be pretty sweet as well...

I've had a D90 and then got a D7000. I can say that the difference was not that much except for higher iso performance. And I have to admit that there was something kind of special with the D90 sensor. I don't know who manufactured it, but it had something the D7000 did not. Combined with the Nikor 17-55 2.8, it produced some of my sharpest shots.

Here's an example:
