Focus shift question, #2

Yesterday I tried focus shift for the first time. I was at an overlook attempting some fall foliage shoots. I tried several attempts various f stops from 5.6 to 16. All attempts resulted in only getting 1 or 2 shots with only the focus point being clear. Settings were number of shots 100, delay 0", various f stops ,and focus steps varied between 4 and 7.
Later on the hike out I found a dead tree with a fern growing out of it and tried again and got 32 shots.
What am I doing wrong on the long on the long distance shots or is this just a close up/ macro thing? That would really bum me out as I do more landscape than anything else.

Thanks, Alan

I agree with Fred. Just the first video could answer why you had the results you talk about. The rest of the course will take you through the whole process and it is tailored to the D850, 780, Z6 and Z7. It is also less than 20 dollars US. I am using it now and I like it.
