The B/W image has a very simple charm, most likely the most difficult to get

Finally the B&W shot gets a little love. Family and friends reactions have been kinda, "Meh..." but it's probably my favorite image out of the whole shoot. I hesitate to post the one everyone's crazy about because it's just a silly goofing around shot but I'll throw it up here in a few.

So thank you both! I salute your clearly superior and discriminating taste. :)

One more from Balboa Park... Featuring Brenna and Saori being silly and the shot most people are fawning over. And to answer the question before it gets asked; yes, while they were keen to demonstrate they very much CAN drive those ridiculous things while on pointe, I wasn't sure who they put more at risk in their two minutes of scooter induced mayhem: Themselves, their photographer or the public at large.

Just to put it out there, all social distancing protocols were maintained while taking these shots. Primarily distance. A lot of distance. I don't think there was another soul around for several(!) miles; my location for these shots was deep in the back country/BLM territory.

I started on what appeared to be a respectable path but dead-ended, and became map-and-compass territory, after only a mile.

Things are going nicely but it's getting warm at this point. Hot enough I'm staging a few water bottles for return trip.
.....
.....

.....
Oh my... What have we here? A "hobbit hole", that's what! Okay, so it's a mine-shaft and I really have no business entering a mine-shaft but they're a personal weakness. Curious since there are no mining groups in the area according to my map. No tailings or any other sign I can detect that normally indicate a mine-shaft, either. It's like this little guy shouldn't even be here. The shaft looks collapsed from the outside so I'm thinking it's probably shallow, flooded or both and so not worth my trouble. Still, it's worth a short belly crawl to see what I can see.

.....
PSH_7962.jpg

Lo and behold it's cavernous just a few feet in. I can easily stand up fully with room to spare. It's also a deep shaft... Reeeally deep. I don't have a flash on me, and my D850 has no pop-up, so these next photos were all light-painted with my LED flashlight.

.....
PSH_8002.jpg

.....
This sucker just goes on and on... I'm about one-hundred meters in when I accidently disturbed a colony of bats (sorry guys!), so it's time to turn around. More light-painting for this shot, of course. Shot opportunity is limited to places where I can set the camera down to do these long exposures.

.....
Heading back at this point. That tiny dot of light in the center of the frame is where I came in.

Interesting photos, Fish! Just be careful out there. So how do you like your Tamron 24-70mm?

I like it a lot; much more than the G1 version I used to own. The G2 far less vignetting, snappy auto-focus and great color/contrast in my experience. Chromatic aberration is much better controlled on the G2 as well and that's a big plus for me. CA just sucks, in my opinion, so I'm glad to see the G2 exhibits next to none where my G1 would have shown quite a bit. My copy did need a minor auto-focus calibration for my D850. The fact the G2 version is Tap-in Console compatible is another big plus in my book since I don't like Nikon's built-in auto-focus calibration tool that limits me to a single, global correction for a particular lens. (Begin mini-rant...) In my experience to get the best performance you can out of a lens, you calibrate its auto-focus. Period. I don't care WHO made it (end of mini-rant). Knowing the lens firmware can be updated is also nice. All that being said, I will mention a couple really nit-picky things about this lens but I really do mean Nit... Picky... Things. They may even be specific to my copy.

Nit Pick number one would be that it's a tad soft in the extreme corners. At 70mm. Wide open. That's a lot of caveats, and I don't mean it's total mush in the corners under those circumstances, I mean to say the extreme corners look a little soft in my opinion. Not a deal-breaker for ME because it's not a lens I will be shooting at 70mm wide open anyway and from f/4 on down I'm pretty happy with the corners.

Nit Pick number two would be that I can find some "onion ring-esque" bokeh when looking (specifically) at Bokeh Balls at high enough magnification. It takes some looking but it's there. The G2, again, shows vast improvement over the G1 "bokeh balls", which were definitely onion ring-esque with little effort required to find it.

Neither of these nit picks are things I go looking for in my shots after the first week or so of owning a new lens. For the first week I really do try to "punish" a new lens by shooting things like brick walls and foliage, looking for CA, or other things to go wrong and making mental notes. If I don't feel confident about the lens, I return it and chalk it up to experience. If I'm convinced I have an acceptable copy I keep it and the pixel peeping stops.

Thanks for the detailed response, Paul. I know what you mean about the onion ring bokeh. My Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 has it, but I haven't used that lens since getting a Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR. My Sigma is extremely sharp (something unique about this particular copy) because I compared 3 identical lenses before choosing this one. Your images look great!
