Sensor Crop feature altered

We went for a bird watching boat ride this morning. If I was birding allot I'd have purchased a 150 - 600 zoom. But my Tamron 70-200 G2 with APSC Cropping set will have to do (cheap electronic zoom).
That setting lasted for 70% of the trip. Then on the way back the camera was set on a square crop. WTF!!?
I didn't choose to change it, but somehow I did or a Japanese poltergiest took over and altered the setup for me.
Anybody got a theory as to how that occurred?

Yes I knew about the Cropping options. A quick look at the exit data and nothing looked out of the ordinary but then I've never seen (looked for) an entry for in camera cropping.
It was cold, 40s maybe, and dipping into high 30s on the river with a stiffish breeze. I suppose (?) that could cause a setting to alter. But, honestly, it must have been some fat-fingering on my part.
Using a 1:1 crop is a feature of the D850. Different cropping options can be found in Shooting Menu -> Shooting Options -> Image Area.

How you manged to change this setting is something I can't tell you.

See this relevant entry in the D850 User Manual.

My guess is a button is set for this feature. You might check the custom control menu to see what buttons are set do to certain tasks. Push a button and accidentally turn the dial or vice versa?

I'm leaning towards the same thing. Back when I took drama photos, I wanted to increase my ISO. Since I was up in a completely dark balcony, all I could do was to press the button in the dark and spin the rear wheel. That body had buttons that were in slightly different places than the previous body I was used to. So I wound up pressing the wrong button and changed my file format from RAW+Jpeg Fine to Basic Jpeg.

My suggestion is to look in your owner's manual and see if there is a shortcut that uses a button/wheel combo. It might have been something you inadvertently changed.

It got to be some button or combination of buttons. I just haven't figured out which one(s) to avoid next tome!

I'm glad you created this thread, Chucktin. When looking online trying to find an answer, I came across a diagram that I've seen on the top display of either my D750 or D7200. The thing is I can't remember which body displayed it.

The 36 - 24 warning flashed on the top display a couple of different times, but I never knew what it was for. Apparently I accidentally hit a shortcut, too! :beguiled: It appears to be a crop size that was selected somehow. So now I need to search further for this myself. Maybe you hit the same type of shortcut. Do you recall ever seeing 36 - 24 flash on your top display?

No I don't recall seeing 36 - 24 in the viewfinder display.
When I checked the Shooting Menu I found this: Image Area-Choode Image Are-5:4 (30x24). I had set the last to DX (36x24). No idea how it got altered. Resetting back to the DX crop I could not find a single control that would alter that. Perhaps a control combination. I'll check that custom control setting next.

There is a Custom Function button setting to assign Fn1 (front lower right) + the (rear?) Command Dial to select the crop area, but if I'm reading the menu correctly it is set to "Off".
Weird .

Today during Worship, I went to change the ISO on my D750. I pressed the button on the back and was about to scroll the wheel, when I noticed what was displayed on the rear screen. Apparently I was pressing the wrong button. By mistake, I was holding the i (info button). The rear display showed Choose Image Area. Then in a small box to the right, it showed FX. My suggestion is to press and hold each button on the back without turning any wheels and see what each one displays. Maybe one of them in combination with another button or wheel is another shortcut to change your crop settings.

I looked at the "I" functions. The crop is now set to DX. But I had previously re-set that thru the menu/shooting setup as above.
Did I fumble about, with gloves on, and set the crop to 5:4 thru the "I" menu while we were on the boat? Possible. But I want to think it's unlikely because it takes 2 steps to get there.
I'm going to study the exif data some more.
