For the first many months D850's like D800's when it was first released, in far shorter supply than demand. So I was surprised to visit an appliance/TV/computer store in a large shopping mall and not only did they have a D850 but 4 on the shelf and one for display, plus 2 D5's, plus the full line including a stack of D500.
If I had the money I would have bought one. Here, a D850 represents almost 4 months average gross salary but surely after I can sell my D800. I would hate to lose the D800 since I never sell older cameras, just keep them as backups or loaners or use in workshops for beginners. I still use my D7000 as a second camera on some commercial sessions needing both reach and wide angle, paired with the D800.
I suppose the demand has been met to have so many sitting on the shelf so maybe there will be some discounting to reduce inventor at some of the retailers. If I buy it here it is $3700 but I can get a the 18%VAT deduced when crossing the border for a total cost of $3028 after VAT refund. Next time I need to cross the border I will make sure I had a shiny new in the box D850 and receipts. That VAT refund would cover a grip.....I do not need the larger battery, or frame rate so would not bother with the pricy battery and charger when all I want in the vertical grip function.
I think I am talking myself into it....

My rational side says there is no reason I need it, the D800 does very very well for my needs for portraiture, events and studio. But I want one anyway.

There are none in the NY area that I know of. If you will enjoy it, just buy it. As long as you won't go hungry or homeless, buy it without guilt, life is too short. That's my new philosophy.:)
