Hello, First off I'd like to say I'm a new member to the forum and hobby photographer... Can you guys help as to why I cant seem to view my D850's Raw files on my mackbook pro? Is this possible without using the DNG converter? Is anyone else having this same issue?

thank you!

You'll need a raw converter to open raw files; do you have one installed?

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

What Paul said. I also know that you can view raw files in Windows with the appropriate codex. Not sure if this is true with Mac.

MacBook Pro is just the computer model... High Sierra is the current OS... <--=Windows 10 on a PC platform... It's baked into the OS, not the machine...

Apple adds it so Photos (their photo editor) works, NOT because they wanna accommodate Adobe... ;)

I downloaded the adobe DNG converter, converted the files last night and was able to open them(for preview) but only after I transferred them into apple photos. I was also able to import them into light room but have not started post processing as of yet, and yes I ran the High sierra software update too. The reason I ask is because on my D810 I had no issues opening the RAW files.

High Sierra has issues and is NOT compatible with the Nikon D850 file format. You will not be able to see any Thumbnail image on any raw files you put on your Mac.

Nikon and Apple are working on this.

There is a work around, but I find this a disgraceful situation. An industry changing camera comes out and you are handicapped using it because there is no good software yet, in my opinion.

My money is on DxO PhotoLab, due to their purchase of NIK.

If you like to be bent over backwards every month, go with Adobe Lightroom.

You should be good... Adobe just updated camera RAW and the CC LR and Photoshop the other day, and added the D850 support...

I Know this is a old thread but....
I have been using a D500 for the last 7 months on my windows 10 computer with no problems with opening .nef files, I got my d850 today, took a few test shots(.nef) and computer won't open them. I get "Install additional codecs to work with this file, Download codecs at Microsoft store." Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I dont understand why the nef's would open from the d500 and not the d850 but I already found a YouTube video that told me to download the nef codec, Thanks!
