Why does my Mac not show previews of D 850 files?

I have noticed that when i plug my card into the reader it will not show up on the desktop in order for me to open and preview the files. It will not show previews in light room as well. you are required to import before ever seeing the images. Any help here?

Does your card actually show up on your desktop or is it only the previews that you don't get to see?

Your apple or adobe camera raw probably needs to be updated. Older versions of Camera Raw can't see (view) newer D850 raw files.

The way I've ddealt with this before is to shoot raw and jpegs, view jpegs, mark the ones I liked and then upload the files I wanted from their name.

Hope this helps but I know how frustrating this gets.

I would suspect your card reader or it's wire connector. I've had this happen before. Are you having the same problem with other cards?
Is it the new XG""" card that you're not seeing? Do you see the SD card?

I'm using the D810 and if I put the card in my MBPro, I don't see it on my desktop but it shows in Finder. There I can access the card and see the previews of any NEF on it.

Btw, you can go to Finder/preferences/general and change the display options. By default the Mac does not show any drive on the desktop.

I have contacted Nikon and spoke with a technical rep. My findings on this issue are as follows:

1) This is a software compatibility issue
2) I run an iMAC 27" 4K Retina with High Sierra iOS v 10.13.1

NOT COMPATIBLE!

Included in this list of incompatibility is Nikon's own software, Capture NX-D and View NX-i. 3rd Party Software is no different.

So, you are stuck with those funky blank icons until Nikon figures it out!

I was told it works fine with JPGs, not with the NEF file.

I have not tested it on the JPGs file.

I have attached a sample image below of my screen so people know what we are talking about.

For the time being, you might have to resort to Adobe's Camera Raw Converter. They usually are very fast to update this. You would then have to convert to DGN in order to view the files.

What I have done before when this happened to me (D7000 and D600 when new) is that I saved as raw+jpeg, open Mac viewer and reviewed my images with nef and jpeg side by side. So I could mark the Nefs that I wanted to work with and then open them in PS. So I'm pretty certain that updated versions of PS and LR can convert the files, if you just want to peak, you'll have to work with Jpegs for now.

Been there and knows it's a bit and some more frustrating.

Enjoy your D850.

Indeed, they explained this as well.

However, this is a royal pain in the ass (pardon my language).

Eventually, these little nits will be ironed out. However, it is more than a little distressing to spend $5K and have to put up with these inconveniences.... especially for work related projects. Work flow goes into the circular file.

I am not happy about any of this by any stretch of the imagination. However, I know they want to fix it, so I will have some faith in Nikon that it will be resolved in a timely manner. They are keenly aware of it.

Regarding Apple, I cannot comment on what comes first the Chicken or the Egg. Something the two companies will have to work out.

BTW, Camera Raw is sold by Yong Li not Apple.
