D850 Launch Event locally

Last night I was able to attend a Nikon D850 Launch Event at our local retailer. Unfortunately I didn't make it on time to see the presentation, but I did get to wait my turn with about a dozen other interested parties to hold it and fire off a few shots. We were given a 4MB SanDisk card that we got to keep to take our photos home. Unfortunately again, we were in a dim room with really nothing to shoot but each other and because I don't have permission I am not going to post any photos of these strangers. Besides they aren't any good for evaluation purposes. It felt very much like my D500 in the hands with the controls where I am accustomed to seeing them. Overall it felt heavy to me (I'm a petite woman) because it was the first time I've had a camera paired with the 24-70 f/2.8 FX lens. We were given the option of trying a decent assortment of lenses as well. With people waiting for their turn, I only took about 8 shots and handed it over. There was just nothing to photograph and I didn't appreciate when others pointed the lens my way.

My RAW files are about what you'd expect, 50-55 MPs. There are two features that stand out to me besides the full frame - I am currently using the D5500 and the D500 - the larger file size would mean I could crop and still have plenty of file size for enlargements and it also has a built in focus stacking functionality. How I would love that.

I thought I would be able to return to the store and spend more time with it and ask questions but it was only one of the pre-production prototypes and it is on tour so there aren't any available. I don't really have the money anyway, the D500 and the new 16-80 mm I got last year cost together just under the price of the D850 body only. This could really snowball in a hurry with FX lenses and now that I think of it, I might need a new computer as well. Fortunately my husband is very supportive of whatever I decide on photography equipment purchases because A) He just bought the Sony a9 and the G-master 100-400; and B) I'd be spending my own money.

Thanks for the comments. Shame you didn’t have more time and a better photographic environment.....but at least you got something out of the event. Don’t delay.....you need this camera !!!

Just realized I can't do anything with the file in Lightroom. I looked at the properties and the camera was set on ISO 1250. It's been so long since I've used ViewNX2, I can't remember how to do anything but I did manage to convert the jpeg to a smaller file size for uploading. DSC_0214_resized.JPG

where was the demo? I live in Prove and would have loved to have been there!

Pictureline in SLC. My husband subscribes to their emails so that's how I found out about it. They are on Facebook and Instagram too.

My LCS sold his first one today :D

Well, damn. I called my local shop (the same one that would not take my pre-order but said they would keep my name on an interest list...). They said they had a D850 but someone bought it already. No, they had not called me.

I picked mine up about an hour ago at a nearby Camera store. The manager in the local store called to say that they had one at the sister store in the next town over, and I could drive over and pick it up, I said I would and he passed my name on to them. They were waiting with the camera when I arrived. There are more features than my D750 that I will have to get accustomed to, so I guess that means I have to read the manual!
