D850, local Nikon retailer experience...

I'm trying to be a good guy and buy local, so I called my authorized Nikon camera store here in town. "Can I preorder a Nikon D850 with you guys?"

Store: "Well, we'll put your name on an interest list and call you when we get some in. Nobody has really held one of these yet."

Me: "Uh... Adorama and B&H are taking pre-orders as of today."

Store: "Yeah, well those big guys will get the first bodies. We will call you if and when we get some."

I should add that this store is a certified high-end Nikon retailer, whatever that program is called.

I wouldn't waste my time if I were you... The sentiment is nice, but the reality is... The small local guys simply can't compete. That ship has sailed...

I'm afraid you are right, but it is also a shame. Their are some items like tripods and camera bags that are nice to have the "touchee, feelee experience" before buying

You may consider waiting a bit anyway. I have held off a good bit on each camera I have purchased and have avoided a lot of headaches by not being the guinea pig for real world problems that arise.

With so much gear not just Nikon having problems i always buy local,it may take a bit longer but when/if something goes wrong i just put it on his counter and he sorts it,i never have to pay more for my gear he matches the big boys.

Another way to look at it is that nobody at Adorama has held one yet, either, and their pre-orders are really not much different than the interest list at your local store. Sure, you might wait longer, but as Mike said, there are real advantages to buying locally. And as Moab Man said, there are certain advantages to letting Nikon sort out any early production problems, too.

That sounds normal and acceptable to me. Just put your name on the list and buy one when it comes in.
I'm huge on supporting my local stores as well.

As a businessman, it surprised me that a local store would not want to lock in a $3k purchase immediately. He could have taken a $500 deposit from my credit card and then it would have been unlikely I would rush to B&H or Amazon to do a pre-order.

Except for the risk of a charge back if you did find one through B&H first and decided to cancel through the credit card company rather than facing the local store to explain why you were canceling.
