Hi all, I had my D800 stolen, unfortunately it was not insured. I have been saving for a d810 to replace it. I have a couple of questions. Is now a good time to buy with d800 being released soon, and the massive difference in price from various sores in the UK. Where to buy. I bought my D800 from wex. But I have seen others suppliers p. £500 cheaper. Thanks in anticipation. John.

It depends how long you can wait. The D850 is imminent and that might affect the price of the D810. That said, it might be very slow to come through and i wouldn't expect a big, if any drop in price, its still a sought after camera and will continue to be so after the D850s arrival. Second hand might be the best route, but they still have very strong residual prices. Alternatively theres always the grey market which is a bit 'Marmite', personally i love the grey market (hate Marmite though)

£2400?? wow, i think i paid about £1600 for mine when they first came out. If new and British based is your thing i guess you're looking at that kind of price i guess. Alternatively they're available second hand slightly cheaper

First off, howdy and welcome to Nikonites!!!

As a D810 shooter myself, I'm biased towards this camera because it ticks all the boxes that I needed when I was looking. Two thoughts though as a D800 replacement:

1) Since you need to replace the D800, my usual criteria of whether there are enough new features to justify the upgrade doesn't really come into play. That said, with the D850 waiting in the wings, do you go with another D800/D800e, a D810, or pick up the D850 when released? Depends on price for sure, but if there is must-have (or no-way) functionality in the new body, that might play a role.

2) There's been conficting information about whether the D810 stays in production after the D850 release. Earlier this year, supplies of the D810 were supposed to diminish as production wrapped up. Some of the early D850 rumors are suggesting it stays in production. Whether or not it does, and how well the D850 is received, could all play a role in how the D810 pricing reacts.

It's a lot of speculation that all boils down to when do you need the new body? Can it wait for the D850, or do you need to do something immediately?

Good luck!

hi I have been without my d800 for a couple of months whilst i save up and was waiting for the D850 primarily to see a reduction on price of the D810, but now i'm without a camera i'm missing many shooting opportunities. So i figure i need to get something soon. the D850 thing seems to drag on more than i expected.

many thanks for reply John

Hi J, thanks for reply, i have looked at some of the sites you suggested and I have figured i need to go with a gray import. i can't justify the massive difference in price and i'm missing my camera now...

Hi John, I think you're making the right choice. The D850 announcement Nikon made two weeks ago was so non-substantial that it looks like they are still a long time away from even making a full announcement, so I doubt it'll even hit the stores this year. You'd be without a camera at least for the better part of a year if you decided to wait for 810 prices to drop because of the 850.

I've bought gray before and never had an issue with it. Guess the difference is mostly that uncomfortable feeling. ;)

I guess i have been lucky never had an issue with any of the nikons i have owned ( D80, D7000, or my d800, but it was a mistake to sell by d7000, cause i was not using it after i got the d800. that would have given me better waiting options and i wouldn't be missing shooting opportunities . We live and learn.

Just be aware of the potential issues that might occur with grey imports. They'll not be covered with the Nikon European warranty. However, there are numerous ways around this. Most grey market operators give warranty's that are quite substantial anyway, well enough time to figure out any problems with the item. Of the two cameras and three lenses that i own that are grey import I've never had a problem, but of the stories that I've read they do deal with the rare problems that arise. If a warranty is something you want, you can always buy one relatively cheaply.

Used is a risk with a camera that is so expensive to repair and most defects occur when new or at end of life, unless damaged by the user. In this latter case, warranty is not invoked. Check with the retailer for the grey market version as to who does their warranty service. It makes a difference if they offer a long warranty and are competent, it is worth extra.
The D800, and D810 are well sorted out so either late version D800 or new discounted D810 is a worthy camera as you know from having the D800. I shoot with friends who have D810s and for all intents and purposes, they are essentially the same high quality images.
The latest rumor, from a Chinese Nikon ad, is the D850 will be announced on August 16 and surely D810s will not be built in tandem on the same production line, Nikon does not have spare capacity. If it is intended for fall lease to stores, they are in full production now which means no more new D810s have been made for a while while they changed over production. There probably are no large stocks of new A stock D810s left but surely there will be Refurbished available for some time. Personally, I prefer the refurbs over the Grey market, because they retain factory warranty and are offered at better prices than A stock grey market.
Here, out of warranty repairs are so reasonable, a good used one makes sense for limited budgets, but in Europe or the US, repair is very expensive.
