auto-metering-off delay

This is a question about an auxiliary GPS (Nikon GP-1, DAWN gps and others) and its control.

I understand that the cameras auto-metering-off delay, custom setting C2, controls how long the GPS receiver stays on after each shot.
What does the auto-metering-off delay do in the first place? What does it control and why? When would you want to alter it from the default 6 sec, except to leave the GPS on longer.

I obviously want my GPS receiver to stay on between shots, but I don't want to unnecessarily extend other functions which reduce battery life.

Grateful for knowledgeable advice.

This menu option determines how many seconds it takes before the exposure metering switches off if you do not touch the shutter-release. It you find metering switches off too quickly, say for instance while you're still composing an image, you can adjust the delay time in this meun.

How do I notice when it switches off ?
The big clue is when the Settings Display, which contains the Exposure Meter, is not illuminated in the viewfinder.

The "Settings Display" is in everything inside the yellow box.

Thanks.
My D800e, and my D810, with exposure-meter-off-delays set to 6 seconds, never change the Settings Displays.
Existing D8xx GPS solutions are not satisfactory. Having to wait for a little light to tell you when you can photograph is utterly unacceptable.
Why doesn't Nikon offer a better solution, or an accessory grip with full time GPS and extra battery?
I presently use my mobile phone with a geo-tagging app, etc, etc. Messy!

You're welcome.

It's not just the D8xx series, it's pretty much all Nikons, with the rare exceptions where GPS is built in. It's the only thing I feel is lacking on my D750 and external solutions are cumbersome. The best I've come across is the Solmeta Geotagger Pro2, or one of their other, less expensive models; but even so the solution strikes me as awkward.

In my opinion? Because Nikon is hopelessly out of touch with it's user base.

Can the Solmeta Geotagger Pro2 be set to stay on for 100% goetagging, or does it shut down based on the camera setting "c2 Auto meter-off delay", like the Nikon and the Dawn units do.
Off course you want to shut the Auto meter off between shots to save on battery, but to shut the GPS receiver off defeats the purpose and forces you to wait and watch for GPS re-acquisition. Mobile phones with tiny batteries do not seem to have a problem keeping the GPS on.
Is there a camera-connected geotagger that stays on by means of its own battery, or by control other than the camera's c2 Auto meter-off delay.
P.S. I just followed your link and read about the new Solmeta GMAX, and Pro2. Excellent! Shall do. Thank you.
