Playback problem with D810

Hi folks,

The images I see on the playback screen appear very different to the NEF files I see on my computer.

For example, shooting in low light, the image will look fine on the camera, but I will later discover the file is actually underexposed and often less saturated.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you're shooting RAW... what you see on the LCD is a JPG of your RAW file. It's enhanced.

What you see on your computer is the unenhanced image... IOW, you're seeing a JPG representation without the camera's interpretation for JPG...

The above may sound confusing... suffice it to say, what you're seeing is normal. You need to make the enhancements in your post-processing editing process...

Hey Fred,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Is there no way to see an unenhanced shot on the LCD? Otherwise I will continue getting the exposure wrong without being able to check accurately on the screen. Lightening in post-processing can get noisy etc.

Would be strange if Nikon hadn't remedied this.

Thanks again.

Short answer... No.

How you determine exposure is by reviewing your histograms. In playback, press up/down on the four-way selector button; one of those screens should be your Histogram. Consult the manual for the particulars but you have the options to see the Luminance histogram and/or the separate color-channel histograms.

Basically, what most folks do is learn to read the histograms as Paul points out... Once you get used to that, and develop your own styles and workflows in post-processing, you'll see the camera's JPG as the defect, and not the other way around... The RAW file gives you eminently a greater range of editing than the JPG...
