My new Nikon D810 arrives next week - I'm looking forward particularly to improved AF and image quality and the new group focus.
What can you tell me about it ... hints/tips/loves?

If you shoot in raw, want to utilize all of the camera's functions and seek the best possible image quality you will need to download Nikon's Capture NX-D to process the raw files.

While other programs such as Lightroom may be able to open D810 raw files, you should be aware that none of your Picture Control settings will be applied by third-party software.

You get a ball bearing sound when you tip the camera :) - It's the pop up flash, if it is up, then you don't hear it, down is another story! I discovered this when I was wondering where my lap went when I stood up. I wonder if the 2 things are connected :p

Last week I traded my D3s in against a new D810 (got a great trade in price and Nikon are currently offering the extra £300 on top of the trade in price).

It is a nice robust, small camera that is an easy carry after the D3s. I am amazed and pleased at how quiet the shutter is and that coupled with the ISO range will prove very useful for those sensitive occasions where no flash and minimal noise is critical.

I have been using lightroom so far but have noticed that NX-D produces images with less grain/noise but at the expense of speed and versatility.

The AF is stunningly fast but the sensor size with smaller light gathering lenses does mean you need to be more critical with focus to ensure sharp images.

No complaints so far and for me it is a trade I am happy with.

If the flash is closed and you rotate the the camera, you will hear a slight ball bearing rolling noise.
Otherwise it's a nice camera, I upgraded from my stolen 800E, you need to change the settings fron default. I can link some sheets if you want them

Appreciate you linking your settings sheet as coming from the D3s I am still learning the D810 but want to ensure I get the best from it and it is always good to see what others who are more familiar with the camera are doing.

I shoot 12 bit compressed, and my buffer capacity went from 22 on my d800 to 46. The noise at 12800 iso appears to be the same or better than 6400 on the d800. I am really happy with it after just 2 days of playing.
