The D800 firmware has been updated to correct some issues:
  • When a still image was captured while viewing existing images in playback mode, the monitor turned off, the memory card access lamp glowed steadily, and, in some rare cases, the camera ceased to respond to operations. This issue has been resolved.
  • When the Wireless Transmitter WT-4 was used with certain settings applied, RAW images were also transferred whenWireless transmitter>Transfer settings>Send file as was set to JPEG only. This issue has been resolved.
  • A dark shadow sometimes appeared at the bottom edge of images captured with Active D-Lighting set to any option other than Off with Image area set to 5:4 (30x24). This issue has been resolved.

Power the camera from AC adapter unit or use a fully charged battery.

  1. Create a new folder with an appropriate name on your computer's hard drive.
  2. Download the Windows (.EXE) or Macintosh (.DMG) file from the links at the bottom of this page to the folder created in step 1.
  3. Run the downloaded file to create a folder called D800Update which contains the firmware D800_0101.bin file.
  4. Use a card reader or similar device to copy the D800_0101.bin file to the root directory of a formatted memory card.
  5. Insert the memory card into the camera's primary memory card slot and turn on the camera.
  6. Select Firmware version from the camera's setup menu and follow instructions displayed to upgrade the firmware.
  7. After the upgrade is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
  8. Access the Firmware version item in the camera's setup menu to confirm that the firmware has been upgraded.
  9. Here's how to update your camera:

Link to the latest - D800E firmware A: 1.01 / B:1.02

Modifications enabled with this upgrade of firmware, release date April 2, 2013

  • Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added.
  • Subject tracking performance in AF-C (continuous-servo autofocus) autofocus mode with framing using the viewfinder has been improved.
  • Gamut for Adobe RGB images displayed in the camera's monitor has been changed. This enables more vivid display of images.
  • With live view photography in [M] (Manual) exposure mode, exposure preview was always on. This issue has been resolved.

Is it possible to load firmware into the camera if it's older than the version already in it?

I'm asking because my D800 has up to date firmware but its shutter count is pretty high and I will eventually want to replace the shutter. When I do that, I want to update the firmware at that time to make the shutter count match up to the new shutter. As I understand it, a firmware update resets the shutter count.

But I can't do that if the camera won't accept older firmware in place of the firmware already in it.

Its my understanding you cant use older updates than you have and a new shutter does not give a new shutter count, could be wrong though

As I understand it, simply replacing the shutter will not change the shutter count, but I've heard that the process of updating the firmware does reset the shutter count.

So I would do the update right after replacing the shutter. That would (theoretically) match the shutter count to the new shutter.
