My D800 - Don't love my images as JPEGs - What am I doing Wrong?

My D800 compared to my D700 is amaing what detail it captures. But, when I try to convert an image to around a 300K JPEG so I can post the image on my photography website or Facebook they look to be like a 25k crappy JPEG. With my D300s and D700 I always make a 250k - 350k Image - say 1900 pixels wide and they look great. If I try to do this with my new D800 much of the detail is lost. I've tried to sharpen the image in Camera Raw as well as waiting and doing it as a small JPEG file, both ways the results are awful.

Please... what am I doing Wrong?

I shoot in RAW and yes I use Photoshop CS5

I am NOT an expert by any means - on the road to retirement and I have always had a passion for photography and recently taken photography up as a full time hobby!

Here is an example of what I'm talking about. Check out the BF Goodrich on the drivers door. This is dead nuts clear as can be in Photoshop.

Thank you for your help on this issue... I'm sure it's just me.... ha ha

Try sizing that above shot to around 2500 and 1660 or there abouts and in jpeg format...then use the Nikonites uploader and repost it...lets see what happens there...I bet you money your snap will look a hundred times sharper...

One thing I notice is that you're uploading to photobucket and then linking the picture that way...photobucket sucks sir... :)

Welcome to the forum BTW...jump right in and start posting some snaps as soon as you figure out the logistics of moving the files around...

PS look for the insert image button in your reply window...this is the Nikonites uploader...

When I look at your exif, the resolution is 120 for height and 72 for width… Maybe this is the problem?

Yeah, wow

May I ask how did you see that? - I look at the Exif and I don't see that info. I see 120dpi and it doesn't difereniate between Height to Width. I'm new at my MAC computer and don't see that info under the image viewer and I use Photoshop Bridge and I don't see height verse width info there either...

Jeff, thank you for the info... I am looking to add pictures to my Zenfolio Site that look fantastic. I do hate Photobucket but the forums that I frequent the members there all use it and I signed up for a year and it is really easy to add images to forum post using photo bucket. I did add one of my Zenfolio images to the forums once and it did turn out much better but I forget how I did that...

When I sized the image to 2500 it turned out being 3.3meg... Not handy!!!

My goal is to keep using Photoshop and create 300+ k images that look as clean as my D700.

Marcel, I have a question for you... A good friend of mine bought a new D7000 and he has problems with it grabbing a focus point. Is this just a problem with these cameras I have read a few posts about the same issues and I never read anything about a solution...

Any time you have equipment issues and the camera is under warranty, I would return to the point of purchase or directly to Nikon (if they are local) and have them look at it. I am lucky they are 20 minutes away, typically take about 20 minutes to give the issue a once over and report back to you. Repairs can take a lot longer, weeks in fact!

I can't answer for your friend, but I did not have this problem with mine. How is he/she using it? What light conditions, with which lens? I've read that some people did have some problem but I didn't so I can't say.

One thing I forgot to mention though is that I had to refine my shooting technique. Seems the D7000 is way more sensitive to motion blur than the D90 or 300. Probably due to pixel density, I found that it was almost necessary to use a shutter speed twice as fast as the lens focal length ex: 85mm lens, shutter speed equal or faster than 1/160s. This got me better resolution in general.

Marcel, I totally agree with you. I found the same to be true with my new D800. The shutter speeds that I could get away with shooting my D700 makes really bad images on my D800. That is something I learned after my first trip using my D800. I got home and every image of my wife was out of focus or blurry. I will mention this to my good friend with the D7000. Thanks again for all your help!

Jeff I shoot in RAW and these images are 40+ megs each and they look incredible even if I downsize them until I get to something under 1 meg. Then it really degrades the image. I've never had these issues with any of my other Nikons. Thanks so much for your help! I guess maybe I'm looking for Photoshop help... Gary

Have you tried downsampling with CS5? select 72 dpi, "cmd+alt+i" then in the bottom there is an option "bicubic sharper" (for best reduction), and then make you image size (top 2 rows) to what size you want. If this is what you were doing, then I have to give up.

I'd try downsizing one to 1500 X whatever to see if you can meet the limit on file size and then try uploading here to see if you lose the quality...I know specifically for this forum if I use a photobucket image the quality sucks compared to the site uploader...

Perhaps this is one of the problems the super megapixel cameras are going to have with internet usage...now if you had server space you could host the giant sized files there and hotlink them anywhere...that would solve the problem...I used to run a drag racing forum and I used that server space for all of my photos....I would just html/php them to wherever I needed to put them and it worked beautifully...it is the best way IMO.

Have you tried flickr? Guys with the D800 appears to have more success in retaining the image quality. Check out the shots posted by this guy below.

Nikon D800 Tests | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I use CS5 too but I usually resize them to 1200 x 857. I also use the resize for best reduction option whenever I do that.

The downside of the flickr free account is that it will give you a max size of 1024 x 678 unless you sign up for the pro account which will allow you to post the original file size of the D800. Some of the photo sharing might degrade the IQ of your image such as facebook or photo bucket as you already have experienced.
