Broken 10 pin

I bought my D800 used and never knew it had a bad 10 pin connector til I bought a 10 pin remote to use with it. I am looking for a way to use a remote other than the 10 pin. Is there a remote that plugs into the hdmi or usb slot or is the 10 pin the only way? I bought a battery grip that came with a IR remote, so I can use that but not in bulb mode. I want to use my d800 and star tracker together for exposures longer than 30 seconds, if anyone has ideas I am not thinking of, please help. Also, it costs about the same for another used D800 than to get the 10 pin fixed from Nikon, so thats out. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is the problem a bent pin in the connector? If so, you might be able to straiten with some small tools, or perhaps a watch repair person might be able to help you out.

No, it's a known problem. The problem is I didn't know. I checked on the interwebs and all the way back in 2012, there were reports of new D800's showing up with broken 10 pins. You'd go to attach the remote to the connector and the connector would just push into the body. Those who got if fixed or didn't have the issue stuck a wireless adapter on there to reduce stress on the connector.

I am hoping someone has found a work around to the 10 pin issue. Can you even control a camera with a USB or HDMI?

TT there seems to be some apps in the play store that will allow you to connect via usb. I may get a usb and try out one or two on my d7100.

This is what I need! CamRanger 2 that uses the usb connection rather than the broken 8 pin my remote trigger uses. Not only will I be able to remotely trigger and use it as an intervalometer, it also allows me to adjust the exposure remotely, focus stacking and focus peaking just to name a few. It would be nice to have those features built into the camera, but a D850 isnt in the cards for me at this time. I plan on using this at night with a star tracker but with all these nifty features, I could see its use in many other applications too. Fingers crossed!

Thanks Fred. I hope so, it should be here Thursday. Its a tough pill to swallow though, its more than half the price of a used D800, but it can attach to other cameras as needed which cant be said about the old technology of another D800. I was saving up for a newer camera but now, if this works half as well as I hope, I should be set for a while.
anyone else who wants to purchase this, I found a coupon code. Not sure if I am allowed to share, but if you were to supercompress coal one more than 19 times, you would end up with... not coal20 but...
And just like that, it knocks 20 bucks off the total!

The BIGGEST advantage for me is the visualization on my iPad... The majority of what I shoot is on a tripod... but the hardest issue for my old eyes is seeing whether the area I'm focusing on is actually IN focus... my iPad and CamR2 turn the viewfinder into an 11" screen... I've tried every macro system and focus stacking system known to man... CamR2 is such a breeze, and spot on every time... My D810 does 9 frames for HDR bracketing @ 1 stop per frame...but the CamR2 can do 20 or 30...giving you crazy flexibility if you want it...

Yup, I got it specifically to use as a remote while in bulb mode, but macro is probably my favorite day time shot. It is pretty easy with the D7500 and its flippy screen getting down low but forget it on the D800 unless you wanna lay face down in the muck. I am really looking forward to the focus stacking offered by this new toy, er um Tool. How have I made it this long and never even heard of such a thing?
