I recently bought a Nikon D800 and a AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4 G ED lens and once it starts getting darker my view through the view finder reduces to an impossible level to see anything. in live view I can see nothing is it something i have set or not set?

Please help!

Welcome to the forum. In brighter light, how do the pictures look? Overexposed or underexposed? If you snap a shot when you can't see because of darkness, how do they look? My first thought is that the aperture is stuck closed on the lens.

We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

The aperture sticking is something to check out.

A stuck aperture is easy to identify. If you pick the camera up and look directly into the lens, you should not see any aperture blades.
