D800 AF/ M Button Side of Camera

My understanding is when you press in the AF/M button on the side of the camera, you then have access in viewfinder to choose whether continuous or single with the main command dial and then the area mode (3d, etc.) using the sub-command dial. When I press in the button on the AF/M button, nothing at all is happening in the viewfinder. Is there some other setting that is causing this? Has anyone ever experienced this?

Thanks!

I don't have that body, but when I change mine, it shows up on the top display - not in the viewfinder. Are you sure it's supposed to be visible inside the viewfinder/

No, question has not been addressed unfortunately. Nothing appears in the control panel - top view of the camera when AF/M button is pressed in.

Possibly poor lens contact or an old non cpu lens or no lens installed. On my d7200, when I remove the lens I get no response when I press the af/m button.

I currently have on there a Rokinon (for Nikon) lens. I will try another lens. I wonder if it has to be a Nikon lens. Is "no lens installed" an option in one of the menus?

Thank you for your response and suggestion.

Another question for you - is the Rokinon an autofocus lens? Many of their lenses are manual focus. Definitely try a different AF lens and let us know if that makes a difference, Mode555. :)

No lens installed is not an item, just me thinking of reasons why the button will give you no choices. Many 3rd party lenses work fine if they emulate a compatible Nikon lens.
I don't know the Rokinson lenses, but Cindy had a good followup question. That prompted me to try the af/m lever. Simply switching the af/m lever or the lens itself to manual focus takes away any choices when pressing the button.

Bingo. You hit nail on head. The Rokinon is not an autofocus lens. I put on my Tamron 24-70 which is an autofocus lens (currently don't own a Nikon AF lens although working on that) and all the settings show up. Thank you all! This was driving me crazy!

Just as a follow-up and you all probably know this....in order to get the point options - d9, d21, d51, 3d - focus selection has to be AF-C - not AF-S. This does make sense.

Glad to hear this resolved your issue. There's a lot to learn with the various setting options so don't be afraid to ask. One time I tried out the 3D tracking - I aimed my lens at a moving stream. That little dot in the viewfinder repeatedly jumped all over! :beguiled: Well...at least I found out it works. ;)

Have fun and enjoy your D800. :)

SuperMod: Interesting you say that. I have for years been shooting only in manual. I recently have become interested in another genre of photography whereby I am trying to focus on a moving object. Hence, trying to find AF-C. I'm sure I'll be heading to the forum a lot in trying to learn all about auto-focus. Didn't realize there was so much to it!
