Focus point moving

When I change to portrait orientation my focus point moves upward. As I recall this is an auto feature to make it quicker to focus on the face during portrait shoots. I can't locate where to disable this however. I'd rather just manually change the focus point myself if needed. Any help is appreciated.

Looks like face recognition is only available in Auto-area AF mode. I wasn't using that so I don't know why the focus point was moving automatically. I can't get it to do it on purpose of course.

Which Autofocus Mode and Autofocus Area-Mode are you using?

The focus selector lock should prevent it from moving what ever the reason it is moving I think. Have it switched to that now.

Are you using the viewfinder or live view? I'm puzzled - four years and three D800s and I haven't seen this happen.

Always use viewfinder so I can hold to my face. Plus the d800 viewfinder is the best I've ever used having used electronic viewfinders previously.

mine tends to move around also but it is me hitting the selector an moving it by accident. I have big hands.
I could have swore I seen an option in the menu for it moving to the top of the frame automatically for portraits. Can't find it now or I imagined the whole thing. haha
