Hey guys need some advice friend of mine is selling a d800 mintCondition....for 1000 Canadian... But has 100,000 shutter count...
Am I asking for trouble purchasing this d800....please advise if I should stay away...

P.S. I know there good for 250 but what will it cost to update it after...

i really don't think you could call a camera with 100,000 clicks on it as "Mint"

What camera are you shooting now? What lenses do you already have that will fit on this camera?

If you have no lenses, you might want to start with a Nikon that is cheaper to buy lenses for. The D800 has a couple things that will make buying glass hard on the budget! First it is FX and FX glass is more expensive for the newer lenses, and second the D800 really needs some of the better lenses to get the most out of it which cost even more!

Money is not an issue...it's just is it worth it for the d800 or should I just get an D800e or 810...

Seems like some prime lenses cost more than that D800 with 100,000 clicks...

If money isn't an issue, then a D810 is that latest and greatest of the D8xx series, and has the best test results that I have read!
Yes lenses will eat the money up buying the better ones!lol :)

I have the D800E and it is a very good camera, and well worth buying used, if the actuation count is low enough! I bought mine used with 8,000 actuation count!

If you have plenty of money to afford this hobby, then if I were you, I would avoid any camera with a high actuation count! I would stick to actuation counts lower than 40,000 if I bought used!

If you like a battery grip, the OEM grips for this model is costing $400+ new! So expect the price to be higher if they are including an authentic Nikon MB-12 battery grip! :)

I dont see anywhere what type of photography you see yourself being interested in,camera bodies are so different now that depending on your interests the D8xx could be the best or a struggle,100,000 clicks is only one part of the decision,it could go another 200,000 or fail tomorrow, thats just the shutter, buttons can fail, circuit boards develop problems, lcd can bleed or fog, these things are not just nikon they can happen with any make.
Buying a top end body may seem like a great idea while you know very little about photography but after 6 months you could think i have made the wrong choice, let us know where you think your interest may lay.

1000 Canadian works out at £480. Thats a pretty good price (over here) imo. Ok, its 'half-way' thru its life, but as Mike says its a lottery anyway. The OP is in a position where they should know what kind of a life the cameras has had, studio or PJ work etc. Add a 24-120 f4 and you'll have got a cracking set up for about the £900 mark! If its fast action photography then maybe a D810, but otherwise it sounds okay to me

My D800 has 111633 clicks as per exif data right now. It's running fine. I would not worry about a 100K shutter count if there are no apparent issues with the camera. But being over 100K I would attempt to knock a hundred bucks off the price.

If my shutter starts flaking out, no big deal, I'll just get another shutter assembly and replace it myself. Make no mistake about it, it's a job I can easily handle as I've worked with electronics all my life. I even do some wristwatch repair, so cameras just aren't all that difficult to work on.

Did you buy this?

I have a D800, it is a tank. 100,000 actuations is just under half the life of the shutter. Is the camera well taken care of? If so, buy it. Even if you have to replace the shutter at some point, it is a good deal.

I use all sorts of glass on my D800, I have no real issues with any lens. Even the Tamron 150-600mm

I have a thread going here of images I have posted over the last few years if you want an idea of glass and the capabilities of the D800.

Let us know what you ended up doing!

Just too late for me to say the 800 is very noisy compared to the 810 but alas too late ...now you need to get into AF fine tune ...

The D800 lacks a few things the D810 has, but the one most important thing it lacks is ..... The HEFTY price tag! Fundamentally, it is the same camera. All comes down to what you photograph. A new D810 locally before taxes .... $4,099.99 + Taxes. Nikon Canada is dreaming in Technicolor.
